Seem like they might have some interesting "35" solutions for our cameras...

I'm new so be gental.

I was going to post this same question about www.xl1solutions.com and there adapter found here:

http://www.xl1solutions.com/ADAPTERS.htm

Has anyone has used it?

Seems a bit more effective and less expensive that the mini35.
No moving parts.
But does it give the same result as the mini35?

I've been watching this forum for a bit over 3 weeks and finally decide to jump in.

Well I knew Speilberg wouldn't be shooting no overly fancy camera, after all he was a carpenter. (Or something to that effect). Hey shouldn't you be in bed? Oh, wait, you're on the west coast, I'M on the east coast... I'm the one who should be in bed!

That looks like the Darth Vader of cameras. It's like a souped up honda.

that looks like some sort of early version mini35. pretty much the excact same design with a different box for the optics. check out a pic of the mini 35 and then look at that again

notice the mount .. look familiar.

John If I were in LA, you and I would have already shared beer and women. Well at least the beer....

Ok I know that it has some souped up photos, but are you guys checking out the other adapter rings for film lenses. Just curious as to what you thought.

The adapter won't do the same thing as the mini35. You won't retain the DOF and all your lenses will become telephoto.

? ..im talking about the mini 35 they have on the main page and better view seen here: http://www.xl1solutions.com/IMAGES.htm

but yeah, the regular lense mount adaptor for the canon wont do that

MattC

So what would be the advantage of using them? Just to be able to use the better glass in film lenses? (I understand the manual issues, but you can already get that in a canon manual lens.)

Sorry Neil.

It's hard to tell what exactly is in the picture. There does seem to be an older mini35 type device though.

What interests me is the caption:

"XL-1 Camera with Foton zoom lens with Anamorphic adaptor converted to PL mount."

..certainly alot of crap to throw on an Xl1 :P.. must be an old site . theyve got alot of pics of lenses on the regular lense mount converter there as well

The thing with that site is, they aren't selling the mini 35 adapter. if you go to their ebay auctions there are just overpriced lens mount adapters. All those will do is allow you to use other lenses, but you will not get any shallower DoF vs viewing angle. All of those shots on that page are taken with telephoto to super telephoto lenses (in DV terms) 50mm -300mm lenses. Of corse these will have shallow depth of field, however, have you tried shooting anything practical other than bird watching with a 1500mm (35mm equivalent) lens? Personally I like to be in the same town as the film that I am shooting. :D

So, scharky
are you saving that this lens adapter will not give you the same look as the mini35?

I'm just trying to clearify, because I'm a bit confused.
The 35mm lens itself delivers the DoF not the mini35, correct?

If this is true, then the adapter on xl1solutions.com should deliver the same result but without the ground glass and a heck of a lot cheaper price.

Has anyone had the chance to actually use this adapter form xl1solutions.com?

no, the adapter will not change your DoF. the lense that you use has nothing to do with Dof unless it will allow you a wider f-stop. there are two things that affect DoF, aperature and CCD or film plane size. Since the XL2 will always have a 1/3" CCD, no matter what lens you use whether it be a 35mm prime or the standard Xl2 lens, your Dof will always be the same. The biggest thing that confuses people is the relationship between Field of view and Depth of Field. People always use "35mm" equivalentn when comparing lenses like "the DVX lens is the equivalent of a 32mm-320mm (35mm) lens". This is true only in field of view not the depth of field. The lens used on the DVX is actually a 4.5mm - 45mm lens not 32mm-320mm lens. If you were to use a 45mm lens on a 35mm camera the Depth of Field would be exactly the same as the DVX at 45mm, however, the field of view would be much wider. Depth of filed is always consistent with the aperature and focal length of the camera. Example: Depth of field is equal in all of these cases. Aperature = 2.8 DVX at 45mm, 35mm camera at 45mm, and Medium format at 45mm. All of these would have exactly the same depth of field. However the DVX is now at full telephoto, the 35mm camera is at normal viewing angle and the medium format has a very wide angle field of view.
The Mini 35 works differently than the adapter mentioned on the website. It takes the lens and then projects the image on a ground glass that the camera will then capture. So the camera is only capturing a projected image, It is not actually looking through the lens at all. I hope this makes sense, do a search on Dof or Depth of field for pages and pages of information on this.
