Just trying to clear up my brain...
Is ther any difference between the Canon 16x Manual lens vs. the Canon 20x Zoom Lens as far as DoF goes?
or, is the DoF the same for the both lenses?
Along those same lines, if I put the EF Adapter XL on and then attach a Canon photo lens will I get the same DoF like in my pictures or like the mini35, or will it still look like video?
Hang on there's one more...
And, is the mini35 the only option there is for the D0F look that you would see on film?
Thanks.

The depth of field would obviously vary from lense to lense, whichever you chose. A lense with a longer focul length, such as a telephoto would create a greater depth of field by rendering all foreground and background imaging not in focus, thus presenting the viewer with a greater focus on your subject matter. I am not entirely sure on the "film look" a mini 35 would achieve and how much better it would be than attatching 35 mm photo lenses onto yr camera. In addition to this, there are a great many different adaptors one could use on the xl2, some are for canon lenses, there are even arriflex adaptors.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

See my post here. It might help to clear it up a little.

Kevins, this topic, depth of field and the effect of using different lenses on the camera seems to generate as much confusion and as many questions as anything.
To give you a one word answer to your questions NO, NO and NO.
Any lens used directly on the camera, set to the same focal length and F stop will have the same DOF. Whether is the 16X lens set to 50mm f4, the 20X set to 50mm f4, or a 50mm Canon 35mm EOS SLR lens using the adapter and set to f4 the DOF IS THE SAME.
The P+S Mini35 (and other systems DYI and commercial) that use larger format lenses to form an larger image on a screen of some sort and then re-image that larger image using additional optics, are taking a picture of a wider field of view, and shallower DOF and copying it with the camera-- a different deal entirely.
At the present time, the only two systems commercially available to use larger format (primarily 35mm motion picture lenses) lenses on MiniDV cameras and retain the original (larger format) FOV and DOF (that I am currently aware of) are the P+S (which has been around a while and is available for rent many places) and the MovieTube, which relatively new and not widely available. Both Systems are expensive by DV Standard ($10K +) but since they were designed to allow the use of 35mm Cine Lenses , follow focus gear, and Matteboxes and filters , all of which can cost many times that, they were never intended to be sold to lowbudget, no budget MiniDV camera owners.
search and follow the threads to learn more about this topic and some do it yourself options discussed, devised, and proposed by contributors to this site.

Bill - Any word on when and if the MovieTube is going to be released to a wider audience? Are you aware of anyone in the states that has used one of these? Thanks...
