I thought the Luminous Landscape review was excellent. I especially liked the explanation of 24P/30P/60i because, frankly, I have never quite understood all the clamor about 24P. Probably that is because amateurs like me show their videos on a TV set, and we have no desire or inclination to get into any comparison with real moviemakers.
What will be interesting to see is to what degree Sony updates the VG10 firmware to accommodate some of the shortcomings pointed out in the review. My sense is they will never incorporate RAW mode for stills - people who want that will want to use DSLRs - but the lack of visible focus confirmation and a live histogram is something that should be fixed.
What I'm really looking forward to is the GH2 announcement. That one might end up being the VG10's strongest competitor.

The GH1 especially with the hack is already a strong competitor. From what I hear, the manual features of the GH1 is much better. I still wouldn't mind owning a VG10. I just wish Sony was more generous when it comes to putting features on their consumer camcorders.

Just got a hands on with the NEX-VG10 at the Sony Showroom here in Tokyo. Unfortunately, they wouldn't let me put my own memory card into the camera and do some test shooting.
But overall here are some impressions:
- Well built. Pretty solid.
- The lens feels good in the hand. Nice quality -- not super cheap feeling like some low end SLR lenses tend to be.
- Good close focus ability.
- The camera is pretty front heavy because of the lens. This gets noticable after holding it for a while.
- Pretty menu, but somewhat weird since you are using arrow keys and control dial at a 90-degree angle to the LCD screen.
- Switching the control dial between shutter speed and iris in M mode is fiddly and may not be good for on-the-fly shooting adjustments. May be better if using manual aperture lenses via an adapter so you have physically separate aperture and shutter speed controls?
- Weird position for the 1/8" mic input -- on the side of the top handle right in the middle. Gets in the way of actually using the top handle to hold the camera.
Very tempting, but still wondering if I should pre-order one of these. Or maybe hold out a bit more for the GH2 announcement.

Just don't understand why they left out the XLR. A1U was an after thought but atleast it has them.
Hi guys,
i lurk alot here. But i have a lil somethin to share on the Sony NEX-VG10. A lil hands on of my own.

Hi guys,
It's a consumer camcorder afterall. However, it's difficult to define what a consumer film maker is.
Someone who shoots 100 tests and a few home videos, all in 24P and shown with judder on 60p TVs and 60hz computer monitors.
Consumer or not, you can't deny that this camera will be awesome for people who shoot weddings for a living and want rich bokeh but are aren't willing to push a square peg into a round hole via the fiddly DSLR form-factor (many a colleague have run into overheating problems, intermittent shut-downs & loss of coverage due to the limitations of shooting live events on HDSLR.)
For my Aussie (PAL 50i) mates out there, Ryda's On-line shop in Sydney (https://www.ryda.com.au/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=NEXVG10) are selling them at $2,888AUD, well below the $3,499AUD list price. And for those of you that have already invested thousands of dollars in professional Nikon & Canon lenses, ebay has a heap of sellers offering Sony E mount adaptors & high capacity FV100 batteries :)
I paid for mine in full, now the long 2-week wait till the camera lands in Australia.

Maybe this has been brought up already but does anyone know what the flange to focal plane distance is on the Sony E-Mount vs. the Micro 4/3 mount? I ask because if the two are the same, that opens up mounting c-mount TV lenses to the camera which is very exciting. Those zoom lenses can open up to as much as 1.8. Very intriguing to say the least!

The Sony NEX-VG10 went on sale in Japan today.
I played with one in the store for quite a while and got some footage on my own memory card to examine.
Good news is that interlacing artifacts are not to be found. I can take the VG10 footage and drop it onto a 1080p30 timeline with other progressive footage and there is no problem editing in Premiere CS4.
I also tried shooting some seriously underexposed footage -- around minus 3-stops. And the image held up very well. Color was a bit muddied, but there was still a good amount of detail.
Also tried the 16mm F2.8 lens and the camera becomes VERY lightweight with this combination. It's too bad the top handle is not removable for guerilla shooting... but then I guess you'd be better off just using some other compact handycam for that.
Overall, a very nice camera. If I were rich I'd buy one right now. But since I can only pick up one camera for personal use I'll probably wait to see what Panasonic announces at Photokina on Sept. 21. It's going to be a long 1-1/2 weeks!

hi,
i just got vg10 in hand 2days.
and i found vg10 can use m mode to shoot video as shuttler as low as 1/6!!(just like sony video cam)
but the downside is, there are no mf enlarge on LCD/VF for mf lens.
no auto gain in m mode. really hard to change exposure during recording.
and it is nex3/5 like menu.....poor interface......
at last, i post the pic of my lovely little camera.:2vrolijk_08:

We need to see firmware for this thing.
Most probably is that it uses same Linux based code as NEX cameras.
But NEX firmware is encrypted.
So, only good firm with BGA flash reader can help here.

For those with cam in hand, please try adapting some external mics and/or mixers into the audio of this. I know it has no input controls..but the demo audio using the onboard seemed good and I'm wondering if the onboard audio is workable with external input. For instance, with 2 lavs plugged in, does the limiting of one channel force a "linked" limiting of the other?

Negative, this is will not change american to europe system via this firmware part. The 25p /30p is at a total different place in the camera. Hardly impossible for an user to change that. Unless you desolder the EPROM chips and someone encrypt the content in them and reprogram it, a 10 000$ job, Good bless

Can anyone confirm that an actual Euro/PAL model records 25p in a 50i wrapper?
I am deeply concerned that there is no real difference in the two models and that in fact the PAL model records 30p either in a 60i or 50i wrapper.
Sony loves their product fragmentation and providing true 25p would not be consistent with their practise of leaving 24/25p for the pro market.
Blu-Ray does not support 50i, so why would Sony sell a 50i consumer camera which cannot easily be dumped to Blu-Ray?
I am very, very worried that 30p/60i is the ONLY viable option here, given the market this camera is aimed at.

Anyone having problems with the microphone on this video camera picking up excessive handling noise? I've been playing with the camera all day and no matter how I try to hold it, inevitably there are creaks, groans and other noises picked up by the mic from my handling of the video camera. I've tried holding my hand as steady as I can, but it seems like even the slightest movement of a finger will generate some bad noise in the final footage. Not sure what to do here, I've checked for external mics for this camera and found just the one, the ecm-cg50 but apparently it's mono and very directional. I tried using the 'scorpion handle' rig that I have, but even when using that lots of handling noise gets picked up. Anyone else having this issue? Not really sure how to resolve this aside from I guess making a custom rig that isolates me as much as possible from the mic?

The same comotion over 24P was leveled at Canon when the 5D came out. Back in March, 24P was added in the firmware. At any rate, the 60i format can be overcome easily as others have noted. 24P aside, the VG10 is sweet. Sure it lacks some professional features. That's because it's not for professional that typically spend much more than $2000 for a camera. I've owned many cameras in all ranges of price, performance, features etc. including the NEX-5 and the VG10. Not being happy with the Sony NEX lens, I have my zeiss adapter as well as Canon adapter and lenses. Actually the 18-200 that comes stock on the VG10 isn't bad. Crisper than the 18-55. The higher bit rate on the VG10 definately improves IQ and color is represented better than on NEX-5. Overall, not a bad camera but I expect that a 24P upgrade in firmware is possible at some point.

I forgot to mention that there is a problem I'v noticed, and have read that others have too, and that is the lens connection to the camera is intermittantly causing the camera to be inoperable until the camera moves slightly or the lens is held underneath. re-seating the lens will clear it up for a while but it tends to come back. I will be getting a replacement. Sorry if this was discussed already.

I am very curious why this camera does not seem to have generated as much buzz and excitement as had been anticipated.
Is everybody holding out until Sony announces their pro s35mm camera?
I thought the VG10 would have been embraced as the extreme low-end s35mm camera, filling the sub $5k void below the AF100
I've had the camera now for about 4 weeks and overall I love using it over HDSLR. Ergonomics aside however, there are some serious omissions and crippling by Sony; I just don't buy the fact that the limitations are due to it being a consumer model because, I also own the new Panasonic TMT750 consumer 3D palmcorder and in terms of flexibility, features and manual settings it leaves some serious questions about Sony's bent on frustrating the semi-pro film-maker. I kid you not, this little Panasonic shoots full-HD 1080 50P (PAL model) with 2 types of focus assist & zebras!! Why not on the Sony?????
For anyone interested, I have done a non-sponsored, totally independent review (from the perspective of full-time event film-maker) on the VG10, with sample videos on the Event Filmmaker site, check it out here:

Evro can you confirm that the PAL VG10 shoots true 25p in a 50i wrapper?
I am extremely doubtful that Sony would put something so close to 24p in a consumer camera.

Paul I can confirm that the footage is actually 25P in a 50i wrapper, there is no evidence of interlaced jaggies present even on the fastest moving scenes.

Their are a few reasons.
-No 1080 24p mode
-No 720 60p mode
-Very little manual features
-Way over priced for the feature set
It's double the price of a GH1 and has less features.
It's $500 more than a GH2 and has significantly less features.
Being in a camcorder body and having a good mic is not enough to command $2,000.
Given the feature omissions with this camera I think I've finally worked out who the camera is aimed at: Rich Japanese senior executives who will shoot their kids' birthday parties and their once in a lifetime trip to Disneyland.

I bet some are like me - waiting for the mythical firmware upgrade to see what it shakes out like. The Sony NEX-5 seems significantly improved with its upgrade, so one would hope that the same would hold true for the VG-10. It IS, however, missing XLR Inputs (but I can use my Zoom H4n as I do with my Sony SR7), full manual audio controls, and some manual focus aids and exposure indicators would be helpful as well. $2k is at my upper limit, and I like the form factor. The AF100 is WAY overkill for my needs.
I've finally built a pc that can handle AVCHD files natively with Premiere CS5, and am now enjoying the whole video process. The VG10 is ALMOST right... Maybe with the firmware upgrade... Sometime this month I hear? Anyone hear a date?

Lack of 24p, as I'm sure you've already gathered, is a huge and puzzling buzz kill. Anyone who is going to spend the money on a camera with interchangable lenses is more interested in composing shots and creating a film look than someone spending an equal or lesser amount on a handycam to take to Disneyland. The majority of those people, this camera's market base, want the option of 24p.
I'm still boggled, but... whatever.
Here's a short audio sample highlighting the Quad Mic Capsule's performance in a live noisy environment - sound is raw straight out of camera and completely unprocessed.

How well do you find it handles highlights?
I'm thinking about getting the camera tomorrow at B&H and have been pouring over online footage (YouTube-yuck) and there's a video called "Sony Handycam NEX-VG1 lens demo" and it shows the Sony 70-400 lens on some sort of crested bird (30 seconds into video) that shows some serious highlight blowouts and was wondering if this is typical of highlight handling?
Thanks~

Steve, don't be alarmed. I too saw a shit-load of these videos with blown highlights and it did worry me before I got my camera, however you have to understand that a lot of those clips on YouTube & Vimeo are shot by amateurs & people who only use the cameras auto exposure modes. Most indie & pro film-makers are boycotting this camera because of it's glaring omissions hence the lack of any well shot sample clips.
If you decide to use the camera in full-manual mode you will get very beautiful footage. Here's my best effort with very little post production to preserve the out of camera image:

Evro, thank you for the reply.
Your footage sample looks good and showcases what can be done with a VG10.
Highlight clipping is still a concern for me and I'm guessing a variable ND filter is a must with this camera.
Having used some JVC cameras in the past has shown me how difficult it is to deal with clipping........I hope I can keep it under control with the VG10, which seems possible.
Thanks again~

Nice footage! If you want to shoot with a fast lens outside, I find on almost all CMOS cameras you need a variable ND filter (or just ND filter in general). On the 7D I use one (I bought the FaderND) and it works great. I try to keep my shutter speed consistent so that's why I have to use the ND.
Although be warned, if you need to use the fader ND on certain lenses, it doesn't work that well. I cannot remember if it was ultra-wide or tele lenses as I only use it with a 30mm, but something to take into consideration.

Yikes!! valdi99, this is an amazing leak, I bet Sony won't be happy about it ;) None the less, these manuals might be the kind of help our friendly camera hackers out there need to convert the VG10 from a toy to a real indie camera :)
Major props to you for this amazing contribution!!
To Rick & Steve, thank you for the support :)
Rick is 100% spot on with the ND filter. I bought the LCW Fader ND and for shooting outdoors it has been an absolute saviour. Here a short little clip I filmed hand-held from the stands at Seaworld on the Gold Coast. The camera & lens are stock except for the addition of a Light Craft Workshop ND Fader which I used to adjust exposure on the fly.
Aperture was fixed at f6.3 with 1/100sec shutter.

OK, time to revive this thread a bit. Is anyone using a shoulder brace/rail system with their VG-10? I ask because I have seen a significannt amount of work with this camera in the past three months; enough to justify investing
some of the profits into making the camera a more effective tool.
I've identifed a few "needs" for me
-a framing monitor. Not necessarily HD, since I'm not really relying on it for any critical focusing
-stabilization. Handheld for any length of time is tedious with the 18-200. Nose heavy, and the side to side wobble had to go
-quick on/off the tripod
-smoother zooming. I know, shouldn't be adjusting the zoom while you're shooting, but sometimes you have to, right?
I looked around at a lot of options for rail systems, and finally decided that the Indiesystems Areeba would do what I wanted at a price I was willing to pay. The package deal was attractive; it gave me the rails, shoulder brace, matte box and a follow focus.
So, that's what I ordered. Here is how it looks
32386So far, very pleased. It is all carbon or steel, well made. I;m using the follow focus as a zoom control and it works very well. The snap gears design is well thought out; rare earth magnets hold the gear halves together very securely, but come off easily. Lots of adjustability, excellent stability, and plenty of options for mounting other accessories. The mattebox is very well made as well...an added bonus. I didn't realize how nice it was to have a mattebox until atually using it for a while. the monitor is a Lilliput 7in. from CoolLCD in China. Excellent price, service and fast delivery. thumbs up! good products, good service. No affiliation with either company other than a happy end user.
So...what are you using?

I almost never use the on camera mic for anthing other than ambient audio. Most of my stuff has been talking heads, so they're always wired with a lav and wireless transmitter. I mount the receiver on the tail of the shoulder brace.

Was just hoping for the usual VX to PD black paint/minor upgrade/disproportional price increase ;)

A bit larger price multiplier than the usual prosumer/pro model equation, no?
Yeah, but they're starting to come down in price a little. Here's a refurb from Adorama for $1650 (http://www.adorama.com/SONEXVG10D.html?kbid=66297) (1 year parts and 90 day labor warranty).
Not bad for a large sensor interchangeable lens prosumer camcorder, and only a little more than I paid for my GH2 w 14-140.
I couldn't take it any more and sold mine on aBay, just couldn't stand Sony's idiot proof limitations. Re-invested the money toward a new AG-AF102 :)

Has anyone used one of those mixers with this that claims to disable auto gain audio level?

Hello,
I'm a new member on this forum and a owner of a Sony NEX-VG10. I work with a 50mm 1.8, 90mm 2.8 and 16mm 2.8 and sometimes, the kit lens. I would like to share with you my last video filmed by night : http://www.vimeo.com/22804630 (http://www.vimeo.com/22804630)

You can find a series of insights, samples and others videos filmed with the NEX-VG10 on my website : www.yannickbarthe.ch on this "review (http://www.yannickbarthe.ch/template/?buttonid=197&pageid=1794&tabgroup=26&lang=1&)" page.
I've just bought the SONY CLM-V55 LCD Monitor for the NEX-VG10. A review will coming soon ! Stay in touch !
Hope you enjoy !

Hey guys;
I'm part of a crew that recently shot an independent feature film entirely on Sony's NEX-VG10. The movie is called 'Black Noise' and it's in the final stages of editing but there is a teaser available here

The interesting thing is that the director of cinematography is Farhad Saba (cinematographer of Abbas Kiarostami's 'Under the Olive Trees' and 'Where is the Friend's House'), a cinematographer who has mostly worked with film.
As far as I know this is the first feature shot on this camera, check it out.
