i realized the most cost effective solution is to use the minidisc recorder i already own to record the vows and ceremony. the model i own is the sony MZ-N505 and it has an optical line in. from the manual i got the impression that it doubles as an analogue line in as well.
assuming that this unit will work as a recording unit, then what would all of you reccomend for a lavalier mic?? i really would like to go for a professional sound. and yes i know the old "you get what you pay for," so with a tight budget, what would get the most bang for your buck?

The Sound Professionals (http://www.soundprofessionals.com) have a nice selection of mics specifically designed to work wit the plug-in-power found on most mini MiniDisc recorders. I've had some good results with the Shure omni stereo pair... but they have lavs, etc. Check out the site, and they're helpful on the phone.
