View Full Version : Highest Bit Rate Settings for 1080 24p in 60i?

Hey everyone. I did some hacked AVCHD tests with my Patriot 16GB Class 10 SDHC card and my GH-13 and shot two clips of static "leafy tree" footage on a tripod:

1. "B" settings with Native 24p checked

2. "D" settings without Native 24p checked

After watching the footage on my 47" 1080p LCD flat screen and comparing the two side by side using Windows Media Player 11 and Windows Media Player Classic, both using the K-lite codec pack, I have come to the conclusion, according to what my eyes see, that the "D" settings without Native 24p looked much better.I noticed what looked like mud and other compression artifacts on the "B" settings footage that didn't show up on the "D" settings footage. Of course, the codec could be partly to blame for that. Most likely the "D" settings footage looked better because of the higher bit rate.

So, I've decided to shoot without Native 24p AVCHD from here on out. My question is, what are the highest tested bit rates for a "non-native" 24p hack? Has anyone tested 80k and above? Or would that be pushing the GH-13 too hard? I checked out the GH-13 test spreadsheet and it looks like nobody went higher than 70k on the AVCHD 1080 24p Limiting Video Bitrate Adjustment. Does anything higher than 70k always freeze up the camera? Thanks.

Some of us are pushing the envelope of what the cards can do.

Pappas has a Sandisk card and can hit higher bitrates than I can. I have a average class 10 card and "C" settings with a GOP of 12 seem to be the limit of being able to record without any card speed errors in any situation.

I can hit 3.5x the stock settings with GOP=12 with slight card speed errors under very detailed scenes with panning.

I can hit 4x the stock settings (64-72-80) with GOP=15 on a class 10 card without error.

I can't go any higher than that with my regular class 10 card(patriot LX).

Wow. You're getting 64,72,80 with your class 10 Patriot LX? I have the exact same card and I did a bunch of bit rate tests all the way up to 64,72,80 and I got write speed errors. The highest I can go on my card is 50,52,70 without any errors, including when I film a green leafy tree using a tripod. I don't get why the same exact card gives you better bit rates!!! Does your GH-1 say "Made in Japan" on the bottom or something?!!
