In case anybody wants to know what a few mics sound like in comparison to one another here's something for you to listen to. Just for the hell of it I also did 'em through the Lectro. You'll see how some mics really fall apart through the wireless and others aren't nearly as affected.

Unfortunately I can't include all the mics I've had, but this is a significant chunk.

Click HERE for the sound of a few different mics! (http://www.gettreel.com/some%20mics.wma)

Nice work, Matt--what a great comparison. *That MKE-2 sounds great for a lav--do you have a hardwired clip? The Oktava sounds a bit muddy, but you seem to like it a whole lot for interiors. Is your clip representative of the sound you're getting on productions.

Also, what Lectro set are you using here? *The compander effects sound pretty harsh, worse than my AT U101 set, but I'll have to check it again. *Thanks for posting the clip.

Yeah, great contribution!

Is wireless really always that bad? Yech!

It depends on the wireless set and the compander circuitry, unless you've got a digital system.

Hey before anybody says anything about their wireless being great or this one being bad... make sure you post your own clip. Put your lav where your mouth is! *:D

Putting all these mics right together like this and alternating between wired and wireless illustrates a point that a lot of people don't want to face.

I've used the AT wireless and I'm calling this an open challenge! Let's hear yours before I get a sample myself! It may take me a week or so, but I'll grab an AT with the Tram and then my Lectro with the Tram and we'll see if you guys can guess which is which. Should be fun.

The reason I did this in the first place is 'cause Oleg said that an me66 sounds better at 2 feet then an MKE2 sounds at your mouth. Unfortunately I don't still have my me66, but I didn't remember it that way. Also I can't run the MKE2 wired 'cause it only plugs into my Lectro bodypack. I was able to get a wired and wireless Tram sample because I have 2 Trams... one hardwired and one Lectro.

Hearing any clear mic all by itself sounds good... hearing it directly against other mics cuts the wheat from the chaf. Hearing it again through a wireless... other then a Zaxcom... burns the rest of the wheat away.

If you think an me66 is a nice mic and you hear it in a comparison like this, it'll be one of the worst sounding mics out of the entire lot. *:P

Regarding the Oktava "muddiness" I agree with you somewhat, but in a normal boomed situation it's definitely not as bad... but still I've considered getting an AKG 480b with CK63 capsule to replace it. Another good alternative with a much crisper sound is a Sanken CS1. If you read my threads you'll realize I'm about an inch from getting one of those! My AT4073a also had a crisp sound, but it's not like the Sanken. I hear a lot of people saying you can use an AT4073a indoors and I keep thinking, "they must like room-noise". Outdoors I may take the AT over the Sanken... but for the versatility and value of a specialized tool, the Sanken takes the lead.

autside Matt autside , in very qwuit place (middle of nower )
the me 66 would sound much better then the mke
even from 4 feet ,
i dont like the cs-1 as one mike do all i prefer the the cs-3
and even the 416
about how does your wierless sounds , i can only say that my sounds better (200,210,211 with 200 tx)
the 411 sounds very close to hard wier ( i did a test with sankens)

the audio rms 2020 sounds better
then what i heard on your clips with tram .
and dont put zaxcom inside sines it not in the price range for ordenary people (4000$ inc disent neck and cables)
i usially run it as link to the camera or wierless boom .

Oleg... you're probably right about the me66 under those conditions. I haven't had one in a year and I'm probably forgetting it's sound because when I replaced it with the 4073a I was so disgusted about the me66.

Unfortunately I realize the shortcomings of my wireless sets. I'm considering getting one of the newer 200 series Lectros.

Mine have been around for a while.

I'm going to do a "fresh battery test" later since I just used the batteries that were in them from the last shoot... also I F-ed up and had my DVX on -60db from a dynamic ENG mic!

So I'll see if it improves on -50db and good batteries. I'll post that later... gotta' go to work now.
