Ok, I uploaded for the first time yesterday the firmware GH1__132 with "version change" ticked, "24P Native" ticked and "C"settings. I incremented version change to "2" and saved as "GH1__140" . I copied and pasted to the outside of the 3 folders on the SDHC card Patriot 32gb class 10 card. Then inserted the card into the GH1 powered it and pressed the "playback" (green arrow) button. said "upload 1.3" after a minute it was uploaded.
Today, I went to Ptools uploaded the "GH1__132" then ticked "version compare" ,"24p Native" and the "C" settings. I then saved as "GH1__141". I then copied and pasted to the outside of the 3 folders and took the SD card put into GH1. Powered it on and pressed "playback" ,now it says "no valid picture to play". I even redid the firmware and named it "GH1__140" still same thing. I know its something simple. Please help. Thanks

Did you change increment to "3" in Ptool? Format card in between firmware versions too?

Thats what I thought. But on other threads they are saying that "version change" does not have to be ticked. THanks for the quick response.

you did not mention you ticked version compare patch in your first update but only version change. you need to tick both in your first patch if you wan to be able to update any version after that. do another patch with both ticked and version increment higher than your first value of 2 and update it. you then dont have to tick version change after only compare patch

Do you have any footage or photos on your SD card? If not, it will say, "No Valid Picture To Play". Shoot some footage and this message will go away.

Thanks, this solved it. You MUST tick version change AND version compare the first time.

Another reason you will get this is if the cable you use to plug the camera into the computer is still plugged into the camera. Simply unplugging the other end from the computer is not enough.

This is my first time playing with 3.40d. Previously, I've been on 3.36
I downloaded the ptool today.
I loaded the original 1.32 firmware along with lpowell's reliable in-camera playback patch. This has both 'version increment' and 'prevent version compare' checkboxes ticked
I saved as GH1__1.33.bin. I have also tried saving as GH1__1.40.bin (under 3.36, the highest number patch I saved was 1.39)
When I try to update the firmware, I too get the error message 'no valid picture to play'
I'm sure I'm missing something simple.
Anyone have any ideas?

I saved as GH1__1.33.bin. I have also tried saving as GH1__1.40.bin
It should be GH1__133.BIN, leave out the period between the 1 and 33

Sorry - 1.33 was a typo - I have been naming the file GH1__133.bin

Hi All. I recently tried the hack and had issues. I would like to restore firmware to the latest factory settings. I have closely followed the procedures outlined in this forum but have had not success. Have ticked version change AND version compare, and saved as new bin # but still get the "No Valid Pictures" . Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I fixed my problem by inserting a version increment number ('8' for filename GH1__140.bin). That was where I'd been going wrong. I think the first time you use 3.40d, you have to do this
Check out the YouTube video by mattinSTL. This might help you identify where you're going wrong

Success! I realized that for my first botched hack I did NOT have the Version Compare boxed ticked and I had mistyped a large number in the version increment box when I saved the firmware. I just needed to make it a larger increment than my original value and then the camera updated to the new firmware! This time around I DID tick both version change AND version compare so I should be OK if I try this again. Thank you for your help!

The first time you hack you need to click both version change and version compare with an increment higher then your current firmware.
Everytime after that you hack you just need to click version compare and should not click version change. You should see a firmware version of 0.0.0. This allows you to go back to factory 1.32 firmware down the road and it's as if your camera was never hacked.

I would highly recommend you do NOT try to hack your cam having it plugged into your computer. I didn't even think that was possible... you're opening yourself up to a world of bad possibility doing it that way.

I just opened the original firmware GH__132 with ptool. I noticed that in the AVCHD compression settings there is NO selection box for "Limiting Bitrate". This is a value to set in the DVXuser video tutorial I watched. Anyone know why that selection seems to be missing from my hacked original firmware? I downloaded the original firmware from the Panasonic site. Thanks.

It is missing because it is integrated with other patches in all new PTool versions.
It is not related to firmware :-)

Thanks Vitaliy!
At this point I only have class 6 SD cards. They work just fine with original firmware. I have a class 10 card on order. Will the class 6 cards work at all after the recommended hack? Is there any risk in trying them? thanks.

I've hacked my firmware once before about a month ago. As I recall, I checked both boxes in the PTool. (Version increment and Prevent version compare)
When I check my firmware on the camera, I get 0.0.0
Yet still whenever I make any .bin firmware, place it on my SD card, and boot my camera, I get the "No Valid Picture to Play" on the screen after I hit the Play button.
I've even tried to go back to the factory default .bin file supplied on Panasonic's website, and still receive the same message.
Any ideas?

I was actually able to finally get it to re-flash with firmware ver. 1.22, but still unable to get any response out of any hacked .bin file.
(File names GH1__133.bin through GH1__140.bin and even trying increments 1 through 11 using PTool )
I'm stumped

Disregard my inquiry. I was doing something stupid and trying to hack the firmware for the GH1 instead of my GF1.

All is good. I figured I'd leave my posts just in case someone else does the same thing.

Were you ever able to figure this out? I'm having the same problem.
