Very happy with the Pappa Arts 720p settings on my cheap class 6 Hama card, No failures so far. Not meant as a piece of cinema, just a display of how well the codec is holding up hand held with fast pans/movement etc. Will post up a more cinematic piece soon now I have found a setting that works. The rolling shutter effect seems to have been pretty much negated.

What's the focal length on that lens?

Sure can't do that handheld with a 5D.

As far as I know nothing has been done to the rolling shutter, and nothing will be done to it. A higher bitrate will not change this, it has to do with the way the sensor is read. In 720p you'll just have less jello then 1080p, and the GH1 has less jello then a 5D anyway.

Please do some test before posting something..
Rolling shutter test AVCHD ( safe settings) Vs MJPEG (pappasArts settings)

Seeing some color moire that's looking similar to the Canon's.

Yeah, I've noticed this too about the resized MJPEG modes. Pretty weird.

I'm wondering if this is settings related, it'd be worth testing different settings with charts.

That's the thing that blew my mind last time I tried it. The MJPG mode added the exact same kind of color moire that the Canons had! Why? Why only in MJPG mode? Because the same shots didn't have it in AVCHD. Bizarre.

Did I remember correctly that there were settings where you didn't get color moire? Or maybe it was a clip of Pappas?

GH1 has considerable rolling shutter in FullHD mode, while much less in 720p. This is probably due to the slower frame rate of the former (25fps in FullHD PAL vs 50fps in 720p PAL). I have had some very good results with 720p and DeShaker (rolling shutter became invisible), however in FullHD I wasn't able to fully remove the distortion.

At the firmware hack thread (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=206788) tester13 tried different sensor output speeds (for other reasons like MJPEG mode). It would be really interesting to see if he can set the sensor output in FullHD mode from 25fps to 50fps, thus solving the rolling shutter issue. (I am not talking about a real 50fps FullHD mode, just 50fps output from the sensor and skip every second frame.) Unfortunately tester13 seems to be occupied with other topics and doesn't react to the idea at all.

Until he does something about it, I guess we are restricted to use 720p to avoid RS.

Since Barry mentioned that a few days ago, I have been going over my notes, and if there was a setting that did no moire, it has gotten buried. Finding that, may help figure out more about the quality settings/table interaction between one another.

I can confirm, in both the 720 and 1440 MJPEG settings, little things like screens and roofs that might set off a Canon but not the GH1's AVC mode are displaying moire. Also nasty aliasing on straight lines. It's weird.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I wondered, is it better to just shoot in 720p on the GH-1? I have the hack which peaks at 50mbs in 1080 would this mean the bitrate would go up in 720? Smaller res but same amount of info means higher bitrate no?
