Death Scenes/Exploding Heads/Squibs Ahoy!

Considering that securing locales for shooting has been met with some difficulty, we may have to opt to, instead of spraying blood/gore about a room, shoot a scene "creatively." While I have various ideas set inside of my own imaginative cranium for this, the inquiry arose within my subconscious if any of yourselves could offer possibly alternative shots/lighting techniques for setting the mood without ruining a generous volunteer's household?

You could put red gels on lights hitting the walls. You can go for dutch angles (tilted camera) or other cinematic devices to make it look and feel odd. You could project patterns on walls and keep them darker. (think of soft noise pattern on a slide projector)
