in the shot where the japanese guy hitches a ride with those two guys in the truck, there's a huge obvious shadow of the boom. now... i just don't understand....

That was symbolic of the dread and fear - a bit of foreshadowing, the color of the dashboard indicates that he is being pushed into a claustrophobic sense of unrest...
