So, what are the advantages and/or disadvantages of the pre-record function? I'm not sure I exactly understand how it works!

Simple... it constantly records a small buffer so when you hit the record button it has already recorded a few seconds prior to you clicking the button. You won't miss that important shot!

think of it like you were watching someone drop a quarter ,but you hit the record button after it had dropped halfway to the ground ,with pre record you would get the whole drop

the only drawbacks would be reduced battery life and I guess being a bit unsure of length of pre-roll

I leave it on, because the only real disadvantage I see is, it burns up an extra 3 seconds of memory per clip at the worst.
On the other hand, if I'm a bit slow on the Record button, it saves my ....

Correct me if I am mistaken, it also puts you in free run time code mode. This may or may not be important to you.

You are not wrong.
In my opinion, Pre-Rec is one of top reasons to use a tapeless camera system like AVCHD. Sure you use up an extra 3 seconds at the beginning of every clip, but think about how you used to have to do it to get action on video...(by recording and recording and recording and hoping that you get the action, or by hitting record too late and missing it)
I turn mine on and off all the time, depending on what i'm shooting.
with the big battery, the energy hit is minimal on the HMC40, on my SD5, the battery becomes a problem.

Pre-record does change the way I shoot things. In the tape days, when I knew something was about to happen, I'd have to run the tape and wait... In a way it was the video tape version of Waiting for Godot (pronounced /ˈɡɒdoʊ/); the thing I was waiting for never seemed to happen. With pre-record, when the thing happens, I don't panic, I have 3 seconds to press the record button.
