I'm looking for an inexpensive way to offload my P-2 card. The Lenovo S10 would be nice but they are hard to comeby and so are netbooks with PCMCIA slots.

Would a Netbook with only 1GB of Ram be able to offload a 16GB P-2 card via USB 2.0 in 21 minutes like my speedy desktop?

I'm looking at something like this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+Eee+PC+Netbook+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Atom%26%231 53%3B+Processor+-+Midnight+Blue/9705433.p?id=1218154378164&skuId=9705433

I understand that USB 2.0 has a speed limit, I'm wondering if the memory and processor in this Asus would hit that limit. I've asked around on different message boards, IT guys at work, Best Buy people and nobody seems to answer this.

Does anyone use a cheap $350 netbook to offload and how long does it take?

Here's a FAQ on USB 2.0 FYI. http://www.everythingusb.com/usb2/faq.htm

The raw speed of that protocol is 480Mbps. I would think any newer PC, if not running a lot of background processes, will handle full speed transfer on the USB port.

Not sure what you mean by offloading...are you talking about dumping the card to an external drive or transferring the P2 data to your PC editing program? Are you talking about USB O-T-G drives? Are you aware of P2CMS program? Please clarify. 12 minutes to offload a full 16GB card is faster than any rate I have ever heard of. The norm appears to be about 16 minutes via firewire.

By offloading I mean plugging USB cord into the camera and then plugging into my desktop computer and putting the info on that hard drive. No external.

Sorry I meant 21 minutes. (Fixed in OP)

I wouldn't be using the netbook for any editing and although it doesn't have a ton of space (160GB's) I'd dump that info onto an external drive at the end of the day. And that process can take as long as it wants to. No other programs would run in the background, not even Minesweeper.

I'm not sure what OTB drives or P2CMS is. Actually I have the P2 card manager icon on my computer. You don't mean that program?

AFAIK, ram has nothing to do with offload performance.

O-T-G is on-the go, a special protocol that certain USB drives use and one that the camera can handle. It differs from the firewire offload of the camera in that the drive itself can manage the process to some degree when hooked to an HVX (and I think HPX). It's not the recommended way, but if firewire on your PC is not available, it's an option. This apparently isn't what you want anyway because it uses an external O-T-G USB drive.

P2CMS is Panasonic's P2 Card management software that allows you to ingest P2 footage and then export the entire card, add metadata, etc. It's a free download from Panny's site and works well to get P2 data into your computer.

Alternatively, I believe you should just be able to connect your USB cable and drag and drop the entire CONTENTS folder along with the lastclip.txt file to somewhere on your laptop drive when the volume mounts on your desktop. It's important not to change or rename the folder or any files...just copy them intact. This method may require that you install certain USB drivers for P2 onto your system..also available from Panny's site. I use a MAC so cannot guarantee all the exact steps, but I think I have this right.

Plenty of S-10 Lenovos are still available.

Where have you looked?

Online. I don't see where they say "has PCMCIA slot". Can you be so kind to post a few links! :engel017:

I suppose a new fandangled laptop that comes with a PCMCIA slot is like saying a new car with AM/FM radio.

S-10 never had a PCMCIA slot; it had an EC/34 slot.

I don't know of any netbook with a PC Cardbus type II slot.

Here's one:

So now I'm really confused. What good is a PC/34 if I'm wanting to put a P-2 card in there which is 54mm? Do I need to buy an additonal adaptor? I was thinking the P-2 card would go right into the netbook.
