After finally wading through the many pages in this forum dedicated to the Star Wars DVD's, I got thinking about Firefly.

It is a great series. In the tradition of Star Wars in many ways. A band of rebels. Mal is practically Han.

It got cancelled because nobody caught it in the timeslot.

It's a great show and they will be releasing the movie next year.

I highly recommend it.

I may check it out. I asked Joss Whedon if he considered Josheph Cambell and everything (like Lucas did in Star Wars) when he wrote his screenplays. He said, "no, but I did see Star Wars 10 times in the cinema." (Not a direct quote.)

He's a cool guy. He likes to drink, though, and he loves comic books.

He is a really cool guy. He's really nice to his fans, and even admits his faults (and when someone told him Alien 3 sucked, he admitted it did, while deflecting some of the blame.) Still, as good as Toy Story was, Water World was terrible (he was the script doctor), so no one is perfect. I was amazed at how much consideration he gave to what his fans said about the final few seasons of Buffy, and he really thought through the meaning of each season and was surprisingly forward about parts other people didn't like and why he thought they were or were not successful.

Interestingly, he said that he HATES writing and considers it almost painful because it's so intense for him or something. Weird...

Anyhow, even if I don't rent the Firefly DVDs, I'll definitely check out the movie.

I think the show had good ratings...

However I think it wasn't good enough to keep up the high price tag it cost to produce each episode.

I know it did best out of any of Joss Whedons TV shows.

But yeah a great show, can't wait for the movie.

Rent the DVD's before you see the movie. Trust me when I say they are good.

I bought the complete set of episodes a while back and love them! I have not done much checking, but I believe the original cast signed on for the movie, which I think is great. Also, if you rent (or buy) the dvd's, you can watch them in the order that they were intended to be viewed. The network showed them out of order originally, which some blame on the demise of the series. Dunno if that is true, though.

???

It true, Firefly had stronger ratings than Buffy and Angel at the time of it showing. It just cost way too much to produce and Fox wasn't seeing a profit. I'll try to dig up the article where I read this.

Once nice touch for me (And I was reminded of this in the star wars forum, because people were talking about sound in space. ) is that there is no sound in any of the space shots. I think it works really well.

One problem I do have with it is the look and hipster new wave cinematography style. Looks to Buffyish...which not a Buffy fan at all...but loved Waterworld, so admittedly in the minority here.
Though that seems to get better the farther from the pilot I get, but the pilot is a great episode overall.

Shot entirely hand-held.

It's a pretty neat article.

I liked this series... it bugged me so much though that they were building up plotlines and storylines for characters early on which they were never able to touch on because the show got canned...

I can definitely see how this show had WAY too high of a budget to keep enough fans around... besides, they didn't get quite as many fans as buffy watching it because all those buffy fans are into gothic stuff and that doesn't always translate over to sci-fi...

Right, but one thing that may attract a whole new audience won't attract the previous audience with the same director...

It adds to the amount you need to market a show. You've got to build a whole new audience of people.

I was just starting to kind of get into FireFly when the evil network, Fox, cancelled the show.

I'm a huge Buffy/Angel fan, so I looked on the brightside of the Firefly cancellation and realized that Whedon would be able to direct more of his attention to Buffy and it's spinoff, Angel, now that Firefly was out of the picture. ;D

I love my Firefly DVDs. But even more, I love lending them to friends that never saw the show when it was originally aired and getting responses back like, "That is one kick-*ss show!" ;D
