Yeah but your super shorts are packed with so much emotion your films may not need to be any longer. The last one I saw was "one saved message" I believe and that had my wife crying.

OMG OMG OMG
So, I just got the music from Herman, I open up Final Cut Pro drop the track in place and my laptop locks up. No big deal I think, I power off and try and reboot and now my MacBook Pro won't boot at all. It just stops at the loading screen.
The first appointment I could get at the Apple Store is 12:45 today. If they can't fix this I'm going to cry.

I have a backup of everything - I just hope they can fix it in the store.

Hey Chris, just checked this out.
You captured such raw, visceral human emotion here. Powerful and identifiable. I thought the music choice was very unique. I could see others using the typical sad piano or violin, but this was strangely effective.
And Alex was great, she's got some talent there.
You're inspirational!

Story: Interesting betrayal. Very well done. Simple but effective.
Acting: The acting was great and I almost feel slightly cheated. I wanted to hear her grief.
No words were needed but I felt hearing her just a little would have given you more impact considering how well she seemed to pull off that scene.
Technical: The music was good, Herman always does a great job. The style was very offsetting and I think that actually fit quite well. This also looked great and the minor effects were very good.
Great short film.

Wow, Chris. This was nothing short of powerful emotion on tap! Your actress was above and beyond, and I found myself locked into her sadness and self-loathing. And of course, none of that would matter without the awesome style in which this was shot.

Thank you very much. I lover Herman's score. He never goes for the obvious choice musically. Alex is only 17 and I was amazed at how brave she was with her performance. I'll be sure to pass on your compliments.

Thank you so much for the detailed review. It means a lot to me coming from you - I love your films. I understand about the silence. I went back and forth on that, but there was something about the absence of sound that was haunting to me (maybe I'm just strange that way). Anyway, I'm so happy that you liked the film. You made my day.

Hey Chris, good to see you in the fest.
Excellent film. I love how your stories are always so simple but emotionally charged. This is no exception. Powerful stuff. Your lead actress is fantastic.
At first I wasn't sure about the music. It's good but it didn't seem fitting. I guess that was your intention to some extent but it did feel a little light given the situation.
Great job all round, though. Best of luck!

Beautiful work. Short and subtle, the film captured definitively captured what I've seen from student "cutters". Alexandra Landau was absolutely wonderful in expressing both her vulnerability as well as her beauty. She conveyed the transformation from cutting herself to euphoria very well - as if she just had a "pick me up" from a cup of coffee like the average person. The setting was perfect, a clean and bright, white bathroom in direct opposition to the darkness of the emotional situation. Excellent contrast. The music was perfect and only enhanced what was on screen. Extremely well done.

My critique for Facade
The story:
AMAZING! So much was told in that one scene... very dark and mysterious, yet calm and felt very "real." We all hurt ourselves. She's such a beautiful girl and I love how you introduce us to her imperfections in such a subtle manner.
The acting:
She did GREAT! The emotions she portrayed were brilliant... the scene with her crying was touching and real.
The camerawork:
Beautiful... loved how you worked with tight shots a lot to tell the story. One issue with color I noticed was that the contrast was very different in a lot of the same shots.. but nevertheless, I liked how it all came together.
The editing:
Very smooth.. very "cutty" at times but that only enhanced the story... it jarred me a little but I could understand the intent you were going for. Good job!
The sound and music:
Liked the silence... music was perfectly composed and synced in!
Overall impression:
One word: beautiful
My favorite shot:

Very powerful Chris. This hit home for me because my beautiful daughter is a cutter. The performance from this actress was so authentic.
You reallly nailed this emotional subject. Excellent work.
A very powerful film. I have two teenage kids and I am very aware of the issues of self-harming. You give a very important voice to a controversial issue which all teenagers should be aware of. Very well done.

Very powerful! There is alot of girls/guys out there that suffer from this and I think you caught the whole image perfectly. There is a website that is for cutters that are stopping and trying to make their lives better. www.twloha.com (http://www.twloha.com) would be awesome if you got with them and they showed this on their website. Anyways back to the film, loved all of it. If i did have to have a complaint it would be hard to find but i wish their was actual talking. Maybe if we the girl said stuff we might have connected more I dont know. Overall amazing job.

Really liked this one Chris. Alexandra was engaging and the opening shots are great.
While I didn't see the cutting coming, and I was thinking, 'Oh no, is she going to kill herself?' I did see the ending coming, just because of the title, but it's more about the journey anyway, so it's a minor thing.
I agree with Mike that I wanted to hear the sound at some points. Just some breath or movement might have made it more intimate in parts, then kick in the music for the montage sections. I'm a little unsure about the music though. I can't really explain it, but it seems to play against the piece for me. I like it on its own, but not so much for the film.
Congrats on a solid entry!

Great going Chris. I loved the writing. It was simple. I'm already sick and tired of 2-3 twists being put into these 5-6 minute movies in Betrayal fest. "Give me a break", I've been exclaiming, and this film gave me that break. I appreciate your simple and elegant motif, one fitting for a 5 minute short.
The young woman did a wonderful job acting it all out. Part of it was hard to watch because it felt so real. She was a great choice for the role.

It's a subject that is very close to me as you will know from 'Just a Moment' and 'Going Unnoticed' and I think you have captured the emotions very, very well.
Many congratulations to the actress. Many many.
I loved the visuals - especially the mirror scene.
I'm afraid I didn't like the soundtrack though - took me out of it. Didn't, for me, capture the mood. Sounded like night time in a jazz bar or something. Sorry.

I think Herman did the score? Herman if you're listening i LOVE this track. I would totally listen to it

Chris,
I find that the most effective short films are the ones that take a very simple concept, be it a thought, a moment in time, and dig deep into what that very small thing means to the world.
This was done marvelously in Facade. This was hard for me to watch, at times I had my fist over my mouth and was peeking at my computer screen with one eye. (if only to keep continuity for myself.) I was never a cutter, but I had friends who were and you certainly did the topic justice.
On the technical side, I felt as though the color correction and lighting were a bit inconsistent, but by the middle of the film, all of that took a back seat to the content. Very powerful emotional effect for me, one that was quite unexpected. I hope you don't mind when I say I won't be watching it again.
Thanks for sharing!

I applaud you for taking on a potentially very controversial subject.
The music was very unique, and very fitting. It definitely made the mood. Technically, the film was excellent. I thought the lighting in particular was nice, gentle but revealing. The slow-motion on the final walk down the stairs was fantastic.
Storywise, I know I'm going against the grain, but I don’t see the betrayal? Or perhaps I should say the point I see being made doesn’t strike me as betrayal. I see this film less as a story, and more as a portrait of your (very well acted) young character. After a time, I found myself thinking “this intro is going on rather long” and then the title flashed, and the movie was over.
Overall, I think your technical skills are excellent, and I appreciate your willingness to tackle tough subjects. I just struggle with this story as the best venue to exhibit your talents. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

I liked the film, technically sound, acted well. My only concern is that I don't know if I felt the issue of cutting was really dealt with, so much as it was shown. I would have liked to see more of the repercussions of her actions, because as is, I think it seems as though she cuts herself, feels better and moves on. I don't think it gets at why this makes her feel better, or reveals the psyche behind why this is her personal answer to her body image issues. Regardless I applaud the ingenuity and creativity in telling a very original betrayal story. Nicely done.

We knew going into this that the film would work or not work based on the performance. I'm thrilled that you liked Alex and that her performance helped cover up for any of my filmmaking shortcomings. :)
this was a powerful film. your actress did one tremendous job!
simple, strong, hard to watch. so hurtful.
well done!
congrats!
Thanks. As tough as it was to watch, we actually had a great time filming it. We only had a 3 person crew, but you could feel a real bond on set. It was kind of special.
Thanks for your honest critique. That's cool that you liked those last shots. We shot them at regular speed and slow motion, but the slow motion just felt right in the edit.
I agree this is an unusual story, especially for betrayal, but honestly this is the kind of film I am drawn towards and the kind of story I like to tell. I realize it may not be for everyone, but I'm not sure I could change my voice (even if I wanted too). I hope that makes sense.
I could understand your movie so many different ways which is great!
The actress is great and I guess her wonderful acting has to do with the strong direction.
Very powerful movie, I think.
Thank you so much. Alex deserves all the credit. I just tried to create and environment where she would be comfortable to take risks.
Thanks for the review. I'm not sure anyone could deal with "cutting" in three and half minutes. I just wanted to show one young woman's moment of self betrayal - although I realize that makes for a bit of an unusual story.

Well done, Chris. This is an issue I know very little about.
Have you considered using it as a PSA? I'm sure that some national organization could make great use of it.

Chris, finally a chance to comment on Facade.
First of all, I really appreciate any artist that makes legitimate social commentary through their chosen medium. Facade does this powerfully and in no small part because of your lead. Like others have commented here, the simplicity allowed for us to become involved in your character and story.
Like you, I enjoy 'silent' movies. It seems these days I am enjoying them more and more. A lot of the time I feel like there is a constant drone of badly written dialogue waiting for me when I turn on the TV, so Facade was refreshing. The music was great; complimented the movie beautifully.
Thank you.
Sam.

Thank you very much. I'm so glad you liked it our silent film. This is the fourth silent film I've made and I like the challenge of trying to tell a story without words.

Really stunning, Chris.
Here's what I love: You came to a contest begging for treasonous plot twists and turncoat antagonists, and waded in with an absolutely heartbreaking statement on the inner disappointment that tons of people see in the mirror every morning.
That's brave and I DIG that. Congratulations.

wow man..that was hard to watch. heart breaking and visceral.. amazing performance by this young lady. very hard hitting I still have chills in my spine from this. one of the only 3 films or so I'd say so far that really chilled me emotionally and struck a chord.
only minor gripe is that to me personally not sure if the music, it's in that sort of generic modern/current style that makes the film sound/seem more like a skin-care advertisment/info-mercial of sorts whereas something a little more traditional oriented (less electronic/synth elements) perhaps would have suited the emotional impact of it better..just my opinion though.

Thanks Chris. Definitely don't change your voice (particularly based on anonymous critiques from the internet :P), you have a very strong one. While this wasn't my particular cup of tea, you clearly touched a lot of people with this. Keep making films that you are passionate about. Not everyone will get it, but it will be worth it for the ones who do. All the best.

wow, this was tough! Which is a big compliment, because it felt so real. Great acting and direction. Amazing score by Herman which really sells the emotion.
I felt the cinematography was a little underinspired. It could have been more interesting to have her just having gotten out of the shower (shooting around stuff, clever blocking, etc to not show anything), though I dont know the age of the actress so that probably was a no go.
Well done, difficult, a good film

I think this is first of the fest I have seen where the betrayal is entirely internal to a character. For that matter it's certainly the only one I've seen where there IS only one character! It certainly stands out.
You really took a difficult subject matter head-on. That did make it hard to watch, but here's to making that choice! I thought your casting was great, and since that's 80% of the movie in this case, it held up.
I found myself wanting just a little bit more from the ending. What you have is lovely, but what I wanted to see was the outside world. We've spent the whole film up until this point in this character's secret world. Her ugliest place. And now at the end we have her stepping out into the glamorous facade world – so I found I wanted to see that world. Wanted to see the reverse shot of mom and dad looking so proud of their beautiful daughter, not having a clue about the lie she's carrying.
Having said all that, I'd actually like to hear your thoughts on what the betrayal was to you and to the actress.

I agree it's a very complex issue and trying to "solve" it would be impossible, especially in such a short time frame. And the way you described it there, one young woman's moment of self betrayal actually makes it work a lot better for me. You weren't trying to comment one way or the other, but rather show that this occurs. And that for me makes the film work now. This is definitely a film that will affect everyone in a very different and personal way.

The story isn't my cup of tea. The acting was nothing short of genius. The girl showed us some raw emotion, which I would like to have heard. The music was oddly fitting so that was great. I feel that great acting is from great directing.
The only misstep I think was the end. The way she was revealed, I felt like you were going for sexy, which didn't feel appropriate for her age. I don't think you needed to give her a black dress and black pumps to make her look good. I think we get the point if she just heads off to school dressed normally with a smile on her face, books in hand.

Fantastic opening shot. Great actress. Really good look about her. No dialogue but the film carried itself perfectly well. By the way I really like your off stage films logo, that’s simple and effective.
What I like about this was the transition from curiosity to all the other emotions that come with that. Nicely shot, has a very close, personal feel to it. This is a very honest film. I really like that about it.
Herman’s score is excellent - one of the best of the fest IMO. Like how it builds to the 2:15ish mark, those aggressive sounds work really well. Lovely ending shot.
Memorable Moment
This whole film was memorable to me, the opening shot was my favourite, I liked the light in the left hand side. I like how it transitions with the final shot, that’s nice.
In my top 5, one of my favourite films of the fest. Congratulations.

Enjoyed this one, Chris. I like that it gives us nothing but a simple moment and it's up to the viewer to interpret it however he or she wishes. The music is haunting and well fitted to the rest of the piece. Your actress did a good job of keeping my attention and I believed in her performance. I think you managed to capture an authentic moment of self-study... and the ending to me is the most interesting bit of all... she doesn't appear to be looking off screen at someone, but rather at 'us' the audience. If she were looking off camera, I'd say she's searching for acceptance or looking to impress for the short term... but to 'us', I feel like she's addressing society as a whole with a much longer train of thought.
There is a theory that we gain identity through others' perceptions in society, that ultimately how others see 'us' will eventually shape our development. We see a struggling teenage girl sorting through some issues within herself, but to society, she appears to be a confident, beautiful young woman.
Which leads me to believe that you might be illustrating that the facade is in fact the girl in the bathroom and not the girl on the stairs... the girl cutting herself is the superficial and temporary face of her nature... especially if I go along with the theory that society shapes identity... not sure what you intended :) This is where my own interpretations come into play...
Anyway, thanks for sharing. Enjoyed the film!

Thanks for the detailed review and for sharing your thoughts on the ending. I do have an opinion about the "self betrayal" that is portrayed, but I almost hate to talk about it. I think it either moves you or it doesn't and I don't think my words can help.
I will say this, before we shot, Alex and I spent a little time alone talking about the character - we didn't focus on details, we talked instead about pain, emptiness, despair, and betrayal. We talked about cutting as a means of escape. I couldn't tell you how it defined her character - that was a personal decision she had to make, but hopefully you can feel it all in her performance.
I agree it's a very complex issue and trying to "solve" it would be impossible, especially in such a short time frame. I simply love your review.
We talked a long time about that last shot (it actually was our last shot of the evening). We talked about all that had occurred before - the weight of it - and yet the importance of keeping that inside and letting the audience bring their own voice to it.
Hearing you think through the meaning of "self betrayal" and the "facade" makes me feel like it was all worthwhile.
I can't wait to share your review with the cast and crew. Thank you very much.

I wasnt in ANY way suggesting we should have seen the actress naked, just that it might have been more powerful for the character to have been evaluating herself under those circumstances, plus the steam could have been more cinematic in piece that isnt really cinematic per se. Just to clarify.

I was very glad that there was no voice over... not that that is always a bad thing but this flick had heaps of impact because it didn't have VO and you just had to get into her world.
I also liked the up ending when she cracks a smile!

The opening moment, and how it works with the score, is very effective.
At 58 secs in, instead of the lean back with the awkward cut, I would try jump cutting to her taking her robe off in the wide shot. The jumpcuts you have earlier work well, and I think they thematically make sense, since they seem to echo the physical cutting that will come later.
Speaking of, the cutting is done very effectively. Have you already explained how you did it? Sorry, I haven't read through all the comments.
The smile in the mirror before she starts blow drying her hair is very effective. The ending is also effective. Even the freeze frame, which shouldn't work, does.
Someone earlier mentioned this should be a PSA. I guess my biggest problem with it for me is that that's what it feels like to me. Seems like something I would have watched in high school health education class. Now, that can either be a bad or a good thing, depending on what you were going for, what your purpose in making the film was, etc. For me though, I generally want more of a story. Basically every cutter puts on a facade. It just seems a little simple. Perhaps it's also because most stories are about change. You take a person with certain characteristics, put them in a situation that tests these characteristics, and then see if they change. We just see a cutter cut herself. This isn't the first time she does it. This isn't the last. This isn't the time she almost does, then decides not to. Not only that, there isn't even a question of change presented. We never doubt that she will cut herself. I get that that you're trying to show a person in a static place, I'm just not really sure it's a story.
Sorry I'm ranting like this. I did like the film. It's excellently done, and your lead actress does great work. It just seems a little easy, and I know you could handle a more complicated, deep story.

Chris, you always come up with simple, yet thought provoking stuff. This is the kind of film that does stay with you and makes you think about it later. There's just so many dimensions to this film, I just don't know what else to say. You said alot without saying anything. Good job.

Thanks so much for the detailed review. I really do appreciate hearing what worked and what didn't work for you.
I definitely wasn't trying to create a PSA. I know our story isn't traditional, but I do think we have a story with a beginning, middle, and end. I actually think its harder to create something intimate and honest than it is to create something larger and artificial, but I respect your opinion and if it didn't work for you that's cool.
Regarding the cutting, I haven't explained how we did that yet, but I will after the fest is over. I don't want to ruin the experience for those who haven't seen it yet.
Lastly, I'm really pleased you liked the actress.

Loved this one. Good visuals, stellar performance.
I saw a couple comments that said it should be, or felt like, a PSA. I disagree - this isn't something you show to say, "cutting's bad." This is something you show to someone who has a loved one who cuts, someone who cares about the person cutting, and wants to understand the thought process of why that loved one cuts.
This film is masterful. It shows cutting not as a "bad choice," nor does it glorify it - it simply presents it and says "this is why it happens."
Well done.

I was one one of the PSA mentioners, and what I meant was, it didn't remind me of a PSA, but it was so powerful it SHOULD be a PSA.

Chris, what I really liked was you took a very complex story and a very complex issue and put it all into a seemless form with a very simple approach that gave it real meaning.
Herman, you really worked this score well, in fact the score was a surprise part for me. I'll explain the best I can. In the beginning it really felt like it was working against the story, but as we moved in to the second half of the short where she is on the toilet it all made perfect sense. You're a master.
Well done.

Wow... Very well done. I'm a big fan of your work, and this one hit hard. At first I wasn't sure, but then afterward, the images kept playing back in my mind. Very haunting.
Shots were done beautifully. Nice job.
Good soundtrack. Just like a few of the others, at first, I wasn't sure if it was working, but looking back, you pulled it off nicely.
The actress did an awesome job. Very believable and authentic. Please pass on my congratulations to her for a job well done.

FACADE
Review: Threw me for a bit of a loop there with the opening, but it's a film that's deigned to slowly pull you into the girl's pain and her own self loathing. The music while seemingly strange at first is a perfect reflection of that, showing that everything is fine on the outside, but there's something definitely wrong. The simplicity is nice but maybe not for everyone.
Story: Simple story, thought provoking and evokes emotion for the character. All without saying a word.
Technical: Choppy editing that is more of a reflection of the story. And it was more choppy than sloppy so it felt right after a while, more planned. I wouldn't have done it any other way. Personally I might have used some of the girl's audio, but that may have distracted in the end. Who knows?
Acting: She did remarkably well wit the rang eof emotions. Good solid actor.
WrapUp: Simple and beautifully poignant.

Thank you so much for the detailed review. I know how careful you are with your craft and your opinion means a lot to me. I was nervous about the jump cutting, I hadn't done a lot of that before, but it felt right for this film and I'm so happy it worked for you and that your liked our film.

The first round is over and we didn't make the cut, but I wanted to thank everyone who has taken the time to watch and review our little film. I really do appreciate it.
I also have pretty thick skin so if anyone would like to offer any more honest criticism, I would love to hear it.
Thanks and congratulations to the finalists.

Thanks guys. I am very proud of our film.
I'm also very happy for the top ten finalists too - I truly enjoyed all of those films.
I kind of thought people would have a strong reaction to our film (good or bad) and so I can't say I'm not surprised we didn't make the top ten.

A few people have asked how we did the razor blade and blood.
It took a lot of experimentation, but in the end it was actually very easy.
1. Take a razor blade and file down one edge (with a metal file) so that it is no longer sharp.
2. Dip dull edge in blood mix and wipe blood off side facing camera.
3. Drag razor blade across skin. It will leave a trail of blood like a felt-tip pen.
That's it.

Hey Chris,
I've got to start out with saying I think you had the best practical visual effect I'd seen in the fest yet ... the cutting with that razor blade looked INCREDIBLY REAL ... to the point I was questioning if the actress actually took one for the team on that, or if you posted that as a requirement when looking for "cutters" on craigslist or something!
Typically a film with no words, in my book, would be classified as an art film ... but the message in this was so clear & loud, I can't call it that. Well done, and a cool bent on doing no words without even ever hearing any audio ... simply score to drive what's happening, and even the score itself never tried to manipulate us in what we were seeing ... in some respects, just ambient background music.
I dig this, and my only regret is that I didn't see it sooner ... though the short you did with the voice mail from the 9/11 event left me with a more stunned after effect than this one. :)

I think this was well done, as was your last entry that Norm mentions.
I have to wonder if the running time affects how seriously people take these type of entries?
Remember the one that The MacB/ Beamer brothers made for Questfest? It was a big buildup to what was essentially a one-liner, but it was hilarious and very well done. It didn't make it into the finalists either. It was about 1:30 if I remember right.
There are quite a few other examples of entries under 2-3 min that never made it that I thought were much better than some of the finalists. It would seem that a short short is not given as much weight as a 5-6 min entry. ?
There's the other factor that is appeal of an audience. We all know that this audience is mostly filled with young feeble-minded men (myself included), so your subject matter might also have limited appeal here. I think this will be a great piece for you to play at festivals though, and with the right audience it will certainly spark a discussion on the delicate subject.
Your stuff is great, and if you enter one of these again, I would suggest making a longer one... oh yeah, and maybe add a hitman or a go go dancer. :) jk

We were very nervous about the cutting looking faked - so we worked very hard to try and fake it well. I've had a few people who actually assumed we had an actress willing to cut herself.
As you can tell, I like the smaller more intimate stories and even if they don't have a broad appeal, it's very cool when they reach an audience like yourself.

That is an interesting point about the running time. I like the "super-short" films, but I can see what some might think they are too slight.
For our next film I think we will have to have a "stripper assassin". :)
