View Full Version : Uploads and Deadline

As you know we've had some issues with the domain name. An additional problem is that much of the back end is tied directly to that domain name. We're working on getting something up for uploads.

Apologize for the inconvenience of all of this. I know it is terrible timing.

We will add additional time to the upload deadline as necessary to make sure everyone has ample time to upload once receiving upload and compression instructions.

You may have 60MB for your film this time.

Sorry again for the trouble.

Jason

Jason Ramsey

I'm open to suggestions on any proposed deadline change within reason and not solely for the purposes of buying folks extra time, but to allow for the delay in upload and compression instructions being made available.

My initial thought was to allow through the weekend for uploading, which is kinda like an extra week for a lot of people who work, I would imagine. Though, it would also put a dent in weekend viewing plans.

Please feel free to let me know your thoughts on this.

Lataer,
Jason

I'd probably say by the 7th, that way then perhaps we could be ready for the new week..

Fresh Week.. Bunch of films to download and watch.

And like you said, gives up till the weekend & beyond.

Just let me know so I can schedule my keg delivery and reserve my fest strippers.

Rodney V. Smith
03-02-2010, 03:00 PM
Just an awkward time do do a launch. Most launches take advantage of either friday or early saturday so they can get the weekend crowd. Plus with so many films to watch, a lot of people actually get cast and crew and friends together for a watching party. I know viewing habits differ from each person.

Uploading-wise a cut off on the 7th would probably be pretty sweet. As long as the films go live we can make announcements and everythign so people can view during the week if they want. Reviews may be slow coming in during the week and then possibly ramp up over the weekend...

Rodney V. Smith
03-02-2010, 03:01 PM
I am of course just looking at it from a purely marketing standpoint...

Jason Ramsey
03-02-2010, 03:02 PM
if folks want to keep it friday or push it to saturday and we can try to get the films up for viewing same day, I am fine with that. Just want to make sure no one feels burned by the technical issues we've had

Rodney V. Smith
03-02-2010, 03:06 PM
Personally I've been preparing for the Friday as THE day anyway, since I was so late with my entry. I'm sure a lot of us were gearing up for that as well. After all it has been announced in the rules for so long.

If people need to make changes maybe give them until sunday to do so? To make sure they;re compliant with the rules...

added a poll to this thread. Please be reasonable. I don't want anyone to feel burned due to issues that are on our end, so I'm open. But, I'm not very open to people just looking to take advantage and eek out a couple of extra days.

So, if the deadline stays the same, chances of weekend viewing are high. If the deadline moves to the following Monday, of course, viewing would begin monday or tuesday.

Later,

I voted keep it the same, if anything push the deadline later on Friday, maybe even til midnight if needed.

Jason Ramsey
03-02-2010, 03:19 PM
giving some padding on the actual time (keeping it the same day) is a possibility....

Which gives me an idea... we really need a "formal" entry of some sort moving forward for the fests... just to supply a link and formally announce your intentions to enter and provide contact information, so that we can then send out bulk emails in the event anything comes up like this in the future. So, everyone will get word of anything and it's even stephen across the board.

I like this idea to pushing it to midnight on Friday, but I really don't think anything else should be necessary – unless there are still server-side problems.

I voted Keep it the same, but I think the best choice would be Midnight on Friday, so that everyone has all day after they get off work, but you guys could potentially get the films up sometime Saturday, or at least by Sunday.

SonicStates
03-02-2010, 05:12 PM
I'm with the majority too! Pushing submission deadline time is cool with me and as long as there is a safety net in case of server side issues and a bit of wiggle room for violation correction then, terrific.

Rodney V. Smith
03-02-2010, 05:13 PM
I think everyone has been preparing for it to be Friday anyway... guess we're all of the prepare for the worst mindset and respect the deadline...

dougspice

Ha! I think it should be banned regardless – we all knew what the deadline was and how much time existed between now and then, right?

Michael Anthony Horrigan

I say do what's best for the people on the back end who have to work their tale off to make this happen. If they need time give it to them, if someone uses that extra time to get a film in so be it. The people who work their tale off to make this all work are all that really matters in this case. So if you tell me to submit Friday I will and if you tell me to submit Monday I will. The Oscars are this weekend, the weather is breaking and its a great day in the real world. Do what you must.

Maybe I'm not understanding... why would the deadline be extended if the server is going to be up in time. I could understand extending the deadline if you knew the the server won't be up by the deadline, but otherwise it should stay the same. A deadline is a deadline and everyone has had months to prepare for it. If the server still isn't up by 4pm on Friday, then those who aren't exactly finished yet get a little bit of unexpected bonus time.

Well, usually you can submit your film starting a couple of days in advance. So this is kind of a different circumstance. I don't care what they decide, but I can understand why it makes sense to push back the deadline at least a little. Plus, if they get the server up at 3pm, and you don't check and miss the deadline, that would suck.

EDIT: I see now that dvxfest.com is back. So hopefully it won't be too long before people can start submitting.
