I'm getting ready to shoot my first doc. It's about life in the infield at a NASCAR race. It's very low budget. More of an opportunity to test my filmmaking skills really. I'm shooting with a DVX (will be buying it this week) and using an AT897 mic. I'm bringing plenty of batteries and tapes. No mixer, no boom, no tripod, no crane, no nothing. Just a friend to help me shoot and coordinate. Don't want to haul a bunch of equipment although I'd like to bring an easy portable light for night shooting. Don't know what kind. Any advice? Thanks.

Try shooting in a higher shutter speed. You can cover the action alot better. Wear some ear plugs cause it can get loud and take advantage of their craft service booths. :)
