Shot a min of footage out my balcony and just wanted to try offloading the footage onto my Mac. I'm still using FCP 5.1.4 so I don't have log and transfer. I read Barry's post on proper offload procedure so I know not to drag and drop. I have Snow Leopard so the P2CMS would not help me. Well at least the drivers work; my FCP actually sees the footage but I couldn't go any further.
My iMac is i7 with 1G HD so hardware is not an issue. At this point, what's the best option for me to offload from the P2 cards? Or I really should upgrade my Final Cut huh?
Thanks

FILE>IMPORT PANASONIC P2 is what you use with FCP 5.1.4.

Hey Shane I tried it. When I go 'Add Slection to Queue' it would try importing but I get a quotation mark error.
I can see the clips they look so good!

What does the error say when you click on it?
#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

Error - doesn't say anything other then a quotation mark inside a red octagon that looks like a traffic stop sign, under 'Status' in the queue.
I didn't delete anything content... haven't even learned that yet. The file names in the VIDEO and CLIP contents are the same with different extension.
Unchecked REMOVE PULLDOWN
I don't see any funny or long file names.
I set my logging bin.
I have QT 10. something...
Still not working.
Do I have to set an equivalent of the Capture Scratch folder in tape miniDV?

>Do I have to set an equivalent of the Capture Scratch folder in tape miniDV?
Yes. Just set the capture scratch and any imported footage...or captured footage...goes there. Where is it set now? How is that drive formatted? Fat32 is bad...MacOS Extended is good.
YOu didn't rename the CONTENTS folder to CONTENTS 1, CONTENTS 2 or anything like that did you? The Contents folder and lastclip.txt file need to be INSIDE a new folder, and that folder needs to have a name. With no $%&^&#(@ characters.

Hey I found your video:
http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/p2_workflow/video-tutorial.php
My Import Panasonic P2 interface is different from yours. I don't have Volume Path and the import buttons, and I have a preview screen on its right where the Reel Name and other Logging info can be found.

No I didn't rename the CONTENT folders.
There is a Capture Scratch folder for this project exactly where I thought it would be, of course there is nothing in it. This folder is in my mac's HD. Now am I supposed to click and drag the stuff in my P2 in there?? That's what you did in your video tutorial.

That one was done when FCP 5.0.4 was out. FCP 5.1.4 added some features. Or, wait, is that the LOG AND TRANFER one for FCP 6? Because that changed a LOT of features too.
No, that's the original. It'll be different. Nut you SHOULD still have volume path. Hey, trash your preferences.
#44: FCP acting weird - Trash Prefs
Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html
2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

Prefs trashed and still won't work my friend.
My import screen looks just like the one at the bottom of this Ken Stone page:
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/hvx_bare_bones_import_stone.html
I get the spinning status for a bit but then it turns into the red octagon with a quotation mark.
ps Yes I formatted the cards in cam before shooting with them.

Sure you have VOLUME PATH! Click on that folder with the "+" sign on the upper left. Import is just drag into the box on the bottom left or ADD CLIP TO QUEUE.
What format is the drive you have set up as your Capture Scratch? It better be macOS Extended and not Fat32...

Ok I'm getting closer.. I can feel it... but stupid question first: do I have to use an external HD to do this?
My ext. HD is macOS Extended.

Oh I just setup a folder in my ext HD and I tried to set my path to that folder but FCP gives me this:
"HPX test" has invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches the supported media.
Shane Ross

OK. To set the external HD as the CAPTURE SCRATCH, you need to go to the Final Cut Pro menu, and choose SYSTEM SETTINGS. The first window is SCRATCH DISKS. THAT is where you point FCP to your external HD.
The VOLUME PATH is where you point FCP to the card or card offload you want to import.

Ok I changed the scratch disk to my ext HD. But....
So if I click on the +folder I would be telling FCP to look for the P2 card there? Or am I telling FCP where to import the footage to?

So it obviously knows where the cards are cuz I see the clips, it just won't import them.
let me jump in here... where is the actual footage currently? are you trying to do this from a card IN your camera, connected to your mac via firewire/usb? or have you transferred your footage to your computer/external hard drive?

Now I have my footage on both my P2 (via firewire) and my ext HD. FCP's P2 import screen can see them both, but just can't import either.
Thanks

I'm using Premiere for now. I guess until I upgrade to FCS3.
Thanks
