View Full Version : having trouble loading scene files

I've read other threads on this subject, but after following all the steps, I still can't manage to get my camera to recognize scene files uploaded onto my SD card.
I've formatted the card, gone through all the steps of writing the generic 4 scene files in the camera, deleting them and replacing (and renaming) them with the SD card in a card reader. After reinserting the SD card back into the camera, I keep getting the dreaded blue "NO FILE".
I can't figure out what step I'm missing, and it's driving me more than a little crazy!
Any thoughts?
thanks,
steve

Hi spressman,
This is just a thought but do you have the correct directory structure on the SD card so the camera can find it. I find the easiest way is to save the original Scene files to the SD card first, if you have not done this before. That way the camera will create the correct directory structure for you and then all you have to do is copy the new Scene files over the original save ones and you are in business. Then when you insert the SD card and select Read in the Scene file menu the new scene files will be displayed.

I'm pretty sure the SD card already has the right directory structure. When I put it into the card reader, it shows all of the various folders, including the PS2 folder, where scene files are stored.
But everytime I copy the new scene files into that folder and rename them according to protocol (SCENE1, txt, etc), I still get NO FILE after putting the card back into my camera.

I keep having this same problem w/ my 170. Have tried multiple sd cards, same 'no file' result.
you probably know this, but you can only have (4) scene file packages max on the card. If your copying, say 6 or 7 scene file packages the camera won't recognize it. Each file package contains six variations of that scene file. Also be sure to move your cursor off the last character in the scene file name if you are naming them in order to bring up the SAVE option in camera. Finally, did you try to format the SD card in the camera as opposed to your PC?

Ok, can you both do a test, as DGW has suggested. Format the SD card in camera and then do a save original scene files to the new formatted SD card. Then go in and see if you can read those scene files off the newly created structure. If you can then there is something wrong with the format of the scene files that you are copying over to the SD card. And as DGW has also pointed out you can only have 4 scene files and 4 users setting files per card. Let us know how the original save goes.

I ran the test as suggested, and sure enough the card is recognizing the original scene files. So now I have to figure out why I'm unable to replace those with four scene files uploaded from the Panasonic web site.

What type of camera are you trying to load them into, and what territory are you from? The scene files on the panasonic site are only for the USA models.

HVX200, and I'm in the US (San Francisco)

Are you sure it's an HVX200P? Not a gray-market import? Save some scene files out to an SD card, and open them with a text editor, and look at the model number. If it says HVX200T, that would explain it...

Did as you suggested -- scene files saved to the SD card confirm that the camera is an HVX200P.

Hi spressman,
I have downloaded those scene files and uploaded them to a HVX202EN which is the asia pacific model. But what I did was open one of the orginal scene files in a text window and opened a second text window with the scene file from the panasonic site. Then I checked the codes on the left hand side of each of the 6 individual settings. I think the last line of each F1-F6 is different for cameras depending on location. Now I know that the scene files are meant for your region, but as an exercise put both scene files along side each other and check for differences on the left of the semi-colon.

Steve,
Did as you suggested -- side-by-side comparisons in text editor of the original scene files and those from the Panasonic web site. No differences at all on the left side of the colons. I must be doing something wrong, but for the life of me can't figure out what it is!

Are you saving the scene files into the proper directory on the SD card? They should go to the same place as the ones that the camera saved. And name them exactly the same way as the camera-saved ones are.

Yep, I've done that -- saving the new files into the P2SD folder and renaming them exactly as the original ones - SCENE1.TXT, etc. I'll keep tinkering, but I'm stumped for new things to try.

Hi Steve,
I think you have a gremlin in your camera:Drogar-Evil(DBG):.
I will try to think of some thing else to help.

I know this is a long shot but try making sure that you are on the current firmware version of 4.10, if you have not already done so.

Load up the camera-saved file, and the downloaded file, in a text editor and check the first few lines for differences. There has to be something different.

Hi Steve,
Another brain storm. As Barry has already said check the original with the downloaded. When I modified the scene files for my HVX there was also a line at the top of the scene file with the camera code in Hex on the left and the camera model description on the right, I think. You will need to compare very carefully as it may be some thing very minor and easily passed over.

I've once again compared the camera-saved files with the downloaded files and don't see any differences. But maybe I'm missing something? For example, here's the first part of one of the in-camera files:

Hi Steve,
This might be a dumb question, but when you name the scene file, you are not adding the txt extension are you. For instance scene1 should be just SCENE1 and saved as a txt file format, not as SCENE1.TXT.
Does that make sense. Just making sure that you do not have a scene.txt.txt type error.
Steve.
P.S. Going to compare your examples with some of my own. Stay tuned.

yes, the files on your sd card must be SCENE1.TXT nothing more or less and same for files 2, 3 and 4 if your using them.

There are no dumb questions -- only dumb answers! I think I was renaming them with the added .txt extension. Voila! They now seem to be loading just fine in the camera.
Thanks so much for bearing with me...and for getting me to the other side of the river. Greatly appreciated!
