I'm shooting in a month with a dvx100 and I would love to do a split in the middle of a continous steady cam shot.

The lead guy is walking then gets a phone call - SCREEN SPLITS WITH THE GIRL WHO'S CALLING HIM - they talk and then the screen UNSPLITS as the guy finishes the scene in one uninterrupted take
Anybody have any idea? I have after effects, premiere, vegas and avid dvxpress to use in post.

Thank you very much, I learn so much from this board.

Depending on how you want the split screen effect to appear, this could be done as simply as using 2 layers of video (one on top of the other), positioning them so that both your subjects are in the frame, and adjusting the visibility of the upper video layer (presumably this would be the video of the girl) when the interaction between the characters is to take place.

You could adjust the visibility of the video layer in any of a number of ways-- fade up, pop-in, slide-in (from any direction), etc.

Well, the way I would steadycam (or Glidecam) the shot would be. I'd have the guy centered in the frame, get the call and then the camera or he shifts to a side. Then when the call is done, have him go back to the center. It will give the film a really cool feel and look. And how I would introduce it into the film would have her slide in on the opposite side your actor on steady cam moved. Then you move her slide back out. Most NLEs will allow you to do this, but you could do it in AE just as easy. Good luck. If you have anymore questions, don't forget to write :)

I'd do like Purpose said, and have him shift to the side (say right). His video layer would be on the bottom. Her layer would be right above it (in the timeline), and use a mask on her's to bring her layer into the frame (or you could just compose your shot with her in the right side of the frame and just stick the right side of it in your layout...

Exactly what I wanted to do. Thank you so much. Can't wait to shoot it. It's the first shoot of the shoot and I was scared to frame the guy to one side and then have a hard time in post. Now I'm sure I'm in bussiness. Thanks.

Be sure to post up some still from the piece when you're finished so we can see how it came out! 8)
