How to make masks of letters

I was wondering how you would be able to type in any font and convert it into a mask. This is what i'm talking about:

I would just type out the text, then use the pen tool and manually create the mask by tracing the letters.

There's a much easier way through illustrator... i just forgot how to do it. Thanks anyways though

In Illustrator, select your text with either selection tool (not the text tool) and choose "Create Outlines" from the "Type" menu.

create it in photoshop or illustrator and just bring it into AE and use layer masks... bada boom bada bing.
