I am looking forward in working in AE (just got it 2 weeks ago). I can do cool looking title work and effects right there in AE right? I mean do I have to use Livetype for the fonts and textures then import that into AE or can it all be done in AE then exported out and into FCP? Will I even need Livetype once I get the hang of AE?

AE for titling effects is the tool. Create your titles in Illustrator then import into AE, as Illustrator creates vector based art meaning you can zoom with no pixilization. Livetype is for down and dirt graphics.

Once render is created in AE import into your editing tool of choice...good luck.

Also, as of AE v6, I would argue that using AE's text tool is much more useful in many situations than importing paths from illustrator. With the new text tool, you have control over pretty much any animatible parameter and you can control the animation on a character-based level.

Also, after AE 6 all text in AE is vector. Plus with the new release of AE 6.5 it has loads of preset text effects.

Yea I have 6.0 Professional....so your saying I would need 6.5 to do title work in AE?

The only thing I use Illustrator for anymore is when I use 3D Invigorator. If your text is 2D, I'd stick with the text tools. The preset text effects in 6.5 are cool, but you'll probably want to create your own once you get a understanding for the program.

Speaking of the preset text effects, anyone know of any 3rd party developers who are selling additional presets or expressions for cool, organic text effects?

I don't think I've ever seen a preset that I would lable as "cool".
Cheezy, sure. Quick, absolutly. Cool? Nope. can't say I've seen that.

Shooter -- I consider myself a pseudo creative guy, but it took me a LONG time to get AE to start looking better than livetype. I'll still go back there for a quick DVD title or something.

Better start working with AE and DON'T GIVE UP!!!!
