Did that pelican case come with the cutouts for the camera and matte box already or did you make the cutouts? I am looking to get a hard case soon and would like to be able to put my matte box in the same case with the camera.

its pick and pluck.. small squares you remove into any shape so its totally custom.

okay cool and I take it that 1650 is the model number for that particular case? I have a EVS catalog that has a bunch of Pelican cases in it but I have no idea what size I would need.

best thing to do is lay your loot out on the floor and measure around it to see how big a case you need.

If your going that big (1650) pelican now makes them with little popout wheels and handle like a luggage cart and I would highly recommend them.

the 1650 does have wheels and a pop out handle.

kai - a couple of thoughts - be careful with the pick and pluck, it can be 'dusty' and the little pieces of foam can work there way into places you don't want them. might want to think about putting stuff in plastic bags just to be on the safe side. you'll see more of the loose stuff as the foam 'wears' when you take stuff in and out.

also - how far does the mic mount push into the foam on the case lid? that would suck if the case took just the right shot. i wouldn't want the mount to get snapped off.

good work.

Flaca,

I've already been dealing with the case "flakes". Jarred suggested perhaps taking a hot iron to the sides of the foam to "seal" it. I'll give it a try soon. That, and i'm looking to find some thin cloth to wrap the gear in before it goes in. Something thin enough that it won't affect the case fit.

The stock dvx mic mount in the picture barely sticks up very far. I'm going to take it off the cam however, since I don't use it. I use a lightwave minimount for the mic on the hotshoe.

The wheels and handle on the 1650 are a backsaver, that's for sure.

the hot iron, or heat gun would probably work great.. you could also try using some sort of hobby spray on sealant .. it would probably be quicker and easier, as you wouldnt have to fear melting the foam on accident, but make sure the sealant is foam safe, or youll melt it anyway with the chemicals in the spray. but there are alot of nice sprays out there that would do the job nicely , even some that dry soft and pliable like soft rubber. anyhow.. just a suggestion.

... and I have plenty of plucked foam to test it on :D

Okay someone mentioned that the cut outs are pick and pluck. I guess what I meant to say is when I get the case will I have to take an exacto knife or similiar instrument to make cutouts so my camera and mattebox and other things fit in exactly? Or are you saying I can move those foam things around in a way that will allow my camera and matte box to fit snug into the case.

What about wrapping everything with tissue paper before putting it in the case would that work?

The foam that comes in the case is "pre-scored" into a big grid. By pre-scored, I mean it's perforated in a way to make it easy to remove, but it's still one solid piece. Sort of like rip-out coupons you get in the mail. So, it's still all one piece per say, but you're able to pull out the pre-scored squares of foam to make slots for your gear. You just use your hands, no knife. The trick is measuring it correctly. It does take awhile to get everything perfect.

The 1650 looks like a large case. Is Pelican the best on the market? I would want something small enough that I would be able to take on a plane, yet big enough to put a camera and mattebox etc. in. So I guess the best thing is to do what someone suggested and measure out how much space I will need. Anybody hear anything about that VANGUARD hard case? I don't think its waterproof like the Pelicans but it does have a lock/key that comes with it. Is it any good?

F.Y.I - I believe anything up to the Pelican 1520 case fits under the specs for overhead storage on an airplane. Cases 1550 and above are two big..Pelican used to only have the 1500 and 1550 case...the 1520 was created to deliver such a case that would meet travel specs.

Pelican's are great..I have a 1500 for my current DV cam and will definitely be getting one once I get my DVX100A...They're rock solid...and have a lifetime warranty..except from Bear attacks, Shark attacks and children under 5...LOL
