I'm dealing with them right now. They are legitimate enough, and have nice pictures on their website, but if you want something even reasonably quickly, forget it. I don't think they are really trying to mess with me, they're kind of just...slow and disorganized. However, you can always reach them on the phone, with no waiting, to yell at them. Not that it really makes much of a difference. I think eventually my microphone might make it here. Lets hope. If you have a small patience, I would give them wide berth (intended sailor joke). If you don't mind holding their hand through the entire process, go for it, some of their prices are good.

Hey Zsolt....

Cool, I just want to know what was up? I talked to a guy name Drew on the phone and e-mail and he was really nice, but I'm just waiting to hear back from them, I first found out about them on ebay... They've got good prices, I'd like to give them my business...

Talk to a guy name Rush at EVS. He will take care of you. I purchase a 525/503 combo tripod from them but the head was bad. I returned the head and his now sending me a replacement for it. I'll deal with them again.

neil I actually bought my camera from EVS in california. Camera Equipment doesnt have Duties... at least its not supposed to and I never have paid duties on camera stuff, but I have heard some stories of Customs not knowing what it is so they charge ya.

I've never talked to Rush, but Cody over at EVS gave me such incredible pre-sales support I was blown away. Lately it's pretty hard to find a place with awesome pricing and kick ass support (That actually know what they are talking about)

For the record:

I originally asked for CODY and RUSH ended up contacting me stating he was "Cody's assistant". Why this is important, I don't know.

I live not to far from EVStapes, bought a couple of things from Rush in person, met his wife to (nice lady). Rush is a expert on the DVX100 So I've been told. He gives classes on it. All the guy are pretty cool there and very helpful. But they could not match the deal on the sinnheiser me66/k6 combo that Safer Seas is offering. But I would pay more for peace of mind. ;)

Yeah, my three and a half year old is still a little young. Well I have an 11-year-old son that could possibly help, but unfortunately he has Attention Deficit Disorder, so that about matches your son's mental age as far as attention span goes! ;D (Anyone every watch Finding Nemo? Remember the fish called Dory?) I guess my 6 year old daughter will do... Can’t wait to watch her write "Scene 1, Take 245" on the clapper board. ;D

yeah, I never have paid duties on camera stuff. I know some people that have though. Not alot of stuff is made in the US though.

Are you serious, there's no duty on camera stuff? Does this means I could by my camera from the US and basically only pay for the exchange and shipping? No duty at all and no extra hidden government gratuity?

That's what I was told, I will find the number given to me and post it. she said if ias driving it over we would have to pay gst/pst. If you had a business, just the one tax then...

If you're looking for a Canadian retailer, try vistek.com. They're prices aren't always the best, but you can haggle with them. They have stores in Calgary and Toronto. If you're anywhere near Kingston, try a place called Linden AudioVideo... they are absolute pros to deal with, have awesome pricing, and can order just about anything in.

Good luck,
Justin

Always love those stores where you can haggle. Reminds me of dealing with some taco stand dude in Tijuana.

Or buying a freakin car.

Or the local street hooker.

Like, what's with the haggle? How much? Just give me a price and quit trying to fuck me.

I'm afraid I can't recommend Safer Seas to anyone. I'm still in the tail end of a situation that involved being sold the incorrect item. When I arranged to get the correct item it was told I had been quoted the wrong price for the original item that I wanted and that what I wanted would cost considerably more. Then they found they didn't have the item I wanted in stock but that they would have it drop shipped from the manufacturer. Then they lost my credit card number. Then....well, hopefully there won't be another 'then' and I'll get the item I wanted in time for my shoot next week.

Nice guys there, but also a high level of disorganization and - not meaning to be harsh - but also incompetence..

There is a EVS here in Philly actually its just north of the city but a friend of mine went there in person to get his DVX100A camera last week and they hooked him up! Gave him extra batteries for little of nothing. I have bought from them too and when they didn't have something in Philly they called their store in Cali and I had the product within a few days. 2 Thumbs up for EVS....Get their catalog sent to your house, its FREE. www.evsonline.com
