Dashwood,
Where did you find the upgrade info for the G4 to 1.25 dual?
I have an old G4 and would perfer to upgrade versus buy a new one.
Has it worked well?

Mine hasn't arrived yet, but they are the only guys who offer a dual processor upgrade - guaranteed compatable with Panther. * I'm sure Sonnet will come out with something else soon too. Check out the series 100 dual section for older G4s. $799US for the dual 1.2, $999US for dual 1.4

Yeah I know. I know. I can't get Vegas just yet! I need a tripod first. I have to have something to edit with! IT was free with firewire.

Is it actually possible to upgrade my processor? I've talked with Apple tech guys a bunch of times and they all say that you can't do it. Are they just trying to get me to buy a new G5? I'm not about to do that.

ccdemon:
it is possible to upgrade your processer through third party processer upgrade cards... however, i would not recommend getting a processer upgrade, especially with "our" mac (I have a single 867 as well) because other parts of the system will limit the speed greatly (bus speed, various caches) especially as FCP becomes optimized for the g5 etc... They are quite overpriced as well IMHO.

You should check out the specs on the new G4 chip Powerlogix is using. * They claim "it has recently become common knowledge that the latest PowerMac G4 architecture, in spite of a faster bus and DDR SDRAM, performs no better than previous generation models when benchmarked with identical processors. (http://www.barefeats.com.) This is also true when comparing the latest models to a PowerMac G4 upgraded with a PowerForce Dual G4. Installing a PowerForce Dual G4 card into an older PowerMac G4 gives equivalent CPU performance to the 2002 PowerMacs, for significantly less expense." * Check out http://www.powerlogix.com for more info.
The way I look at it, I am upgrading a 400mhz machine to a dual 1.2Ghz machine for $800US, and I don't have to move any hard drives, or re-install all of my software, or worry about existing hardware compatability.
jaronheard
12-03-2003, 03:28 PM
That is encouraging, however, I happen to know my g4 is limited by a 256k L2 cache and no L3 cache. That definitly hinders its performance and might warrant a whole new machine instead of a processor upgrade. However, if your G4 isn't a cripple like mine, I'd say go for it!
jaronheard
12-03-2003, 03:35 PM
Nevermind me... I don't know what I am talking about... The L2 and L3 caches are replaced by the ugrad card. I should do my homework before I make all these wrong statements 8)

Commodore 64... Right! You didn't tell me you owned a computer museum!
10 FOR X = 1 TO 10
20 A = A + 1
30 PRINT A
40 NEXT X
That's all this computer was good for now! Of course it really was cool then! I enjoyed every minute of it. I was really excited when I exchanged my dataset to a floppy drive with a FastLoad cartridge. It's too bad Commodore died, their Amiga line could have dominated the video industry ( ::)). Remember the first Video Toaster? ;)
Dante
12-03-2003, 08:37 PM
Flinstone, I forgot to mention......
My hard drive is an "A-Track"
And my floppy is actually a Toaster.
jaronheard
12-03-2003, 08:42 PM
The Toaster is soooooooo sooooooooo awesome!!!!! It may not have been one of the originals, but it was on point for sho. They had one in my Media Production Classes at my high school that they recenetly phased out. I wanted to see if they'd give it to me, but no such luck. I was really hoping to use some of those absolutely ridiculous transitions... like the girl that did a cartwheel across the screen transition... it just doesn't get better than that. ;)

1.25 GB memory
3 drives: 80 GB, 200 GB, 250 GB
2 monitors: Dell 2000FP

I had the matrox RTMac on my old system... now it's not even supported on the G5/Panther yet. Even if it was I wouldn't put it back in. Horrible audio drift/sync issues..
