View Full Version : Pulldown Primer?

I've only recently started shooting 24p regularly, and have been removing pulldown with compressor. But I still don't understand completely why 24p is put in a 60i wrapper in some cameras and not others (my HMC150, for example). Why is this done in the first place if you've got to remove it? And is there a circumstance in which it would be beneficial to keep it in the 60i wrapper (maybe for broadcast?) Sorry if this has been covered, but I've searched and haven't found an answer.

Yes, it's useful for broadcast, but in ye olden days, NLE's couldn't handle real 24p material. So they needed to keep the material inside a 60i wrapper. When people shot film (35mm, 16mm, etc.) but wanted to EDIT on video, the video systems didn't know how to work with 24p. So this system let them edit on video, and create an EDL to take back to the film cutting room, and match those cuts.

We've come a LONG way since then.

I suspect this 60i deal was done so that you could hook your camera to a TV and play it since some TVs don't know how to handle a 24p signal. But I am just guessing. Ironically, it was Panasonic's introduction of the DVX100 that really ushered in real 24p for video shooters. That was what.. 2003? And here we are nearly 7 years later and they are taking us back to before that?

Ahhh, mysteries.

Thanks Perrone. Yeah, it does seem odd that new camera models fool with the wrapper at all these days.

Thanks for the link. I had actually seen that one, and it helped me through the process of removing the pulldown, but I still couldn't understand the point of having to go through all that with my GH1 and not my HMC150.
