I did a search but didn't find the info that I needed, so hopefully someone out there can help me.

When I first got my HVX, I used to offload the P2 cards using "Log and transfer" in Final Cut, now I just copy the entire contents of the card.

I had some old footage that I logged and transfered using FCP, I backed the footage up on my hard drive. I was clearing up space on my computer the other day and deleted these files from the computer itself (not the hard drive), but the hard drive was hook up and running at the time.

After I hit "empty trash" I got an anxious feeling so I double checked the hard drive to make sure the footage was still there (probably should have done it before I emptied the trash), and of course it wasn't. The folder was still there, but it was empty.

I stopped using my computer, ran out and bought "Data Rescue 3." I ran the program and recovered a ton of files but none of them will work when I try to import them into Final Cut, it get a message that says "Translation document needed."

Does anyone have any advice, or perhaps could tell me what "translation document" I need?

Thanks.

YEEK!

ive used various recovery tools over the years. all recover some, some recover much and from my experience none recover all. and again from my experience, many of the files you recover have to be manually opened one by one in the application you plan to use it in then resaved in order to effectively use it again... but thats just my experience. others may disagree.

for your future happiness, from here forward id get into the habit of drag and drop copying full cards to a individual folders on your hard drive then do your log and capture from that. that way IF you delete your logged and transferred content you can always do a simple recapture from the source. yeah it takes up more than 2x the space. but hard drives are cheap. lost footage is not.

Yeah, I've just been copying the entire contents of the card, it seems safer that way. This is just some older footage that I unfortunately I "logged and Transfered."

I've tried to open each file individually, but I still get a message that says "Translation Document Needed," not really sure what that means.

what kinds of files are they and what are you opening them with?

Have you tried opening the files with something other than final cut? Maybe instead of trying to import them to Final Cut you can open them directly with something else, save the files again, and the try to use the newly saved file with Final Cut.
What sort of files are them??
