Looking at SD and CF cards now. The D300s is a huge improvement over my D200 and D70s. I need the "still" side of things more anyway. The video should be fun too. I still plan on using the DVX100b for video. DVX fest etc.

Nice!!! That purchase has been a long time comin' for you. Once you get used to the D300s and see how nice it can shoot, you'll want to sell the DVX.

I'm dreaming about the D300s having a "full manual video control" firmware update... when this time comes... I'll jump in.
Go get yours!

There are ZERO plans for the future to have a Nikon firmware update, according to Nikon rep who emailed me back a couple weeks ago...

I plan on using it for photography and video. More for pictures. I also have the DVX100b. I looked at the 7D and it also has problems. It is not worth me switching over to Canon.

people can say what they want about Nikon but when it is done right it looks so good. This guy has some great shots here. The D300s, D90, the 7D have their limits and you have to work around them. It is not time to sell your video cameras yet.

Aren't you severely limited in manual controls by the Nikons currently out? (except for the D3 as far as I'm aware of)

I also know lots of people who use Nikkor lenses on Canon bodys.

P.s. i'm no expert on the matter at all. Trying to learn for myself as well here.

You're right, lots of people do that. They also put Nikkors on RED cameras. Why is it I hardly ever hear of people wanting to put Canon lenses on Nikon bodies? This is a genuine question, not a fanboy statement.

For stills, I'd take the D300S over the 7D without hesitation. In Australia at least they're in the same price category, so it's a direct comparison. I think the Nikon video is more aesthetically pleasing, but yes, it's harder to work with.

Canon lenses simply wont fit because the Nikon body sticks out too much, it would have to be inside the body to get the correct flange focal distance. If you tried to hold the canon lens infront of a nikon body, you'd not be able to focus properly and it would only work up close and macro.

Because Canon bodies are thinner, it just takes a simple mechnical adapter to fit a Nikon lens on.

Canon lenses (especially the L series) are amazing. Maybe abit too sharp and precise, but they're great.

I would choose the D300s over the 7D for stills without hesitation as well. It feels lovely to hold.

But I don't own a D300s, and I would choose the 7D over the D90 for video and stills due to the ability to meter with my manual Nikkor lenses.

You can but like the others said I'd rather take pictures with a Nikon. I have been using Nikon for the last 20 plus years and I don't want to switch because of the video on the 7D. The D300s doesn't have full manual but you can adjust the aperture and some exposure adjustment etc. So it looks like you can do a few things.

My EF Canon lenses don't have aperture rings...I don't see how in the world I would use one on my Nikon.

The controllability of iris and shutter on the d300s is the exact same as the d90. no difference.

I've shot Nikon since the 80's, so I'll stay out of the Nikon vs. Canon debate - except to say, for DSLR video or a 35 adapter, the range of non-CPU used glass out there is pretty amazing. You can fully equip yourself with a range of fast manual primes for well under $300. WELL under. Look at the older Vivitar stuff, the Nikon series E, etc. Try an 80-200 2.8 AF, a tank-like lens with some real mojo/soul and available for under $500 for a beater that shoots fine. With JPEG compression, you just don't need a $1000+ lens. I tried an old sears 50mm and it looked good.

There are lots of people who just hate the DSLR look, that's fine. If you have enough light and a good eye for lighting and framing, you can get some really pretty shots that just can't be done with a video cam, and are tough to do with a DOF adapter. I even find the grain pretty pleasing when not overdone. And you can grade the sh*t out of it.

The two biggest failing to me are the compression (which really isn't terrible, esp. if you're delivering for SD or the web) and the jello.

Jello isn't just an issue with pans - shooting handheld you can get some bad wobble that really doesn't show on the LCD, but look at it in an NLE and it looks like you shot through a wobbling cranberry salad. And thats a drag - the sort of "whip pan" where you kind of "stumble" into your shot, a little "shake" before the shot settles in? That's part of the available vocabulary for filmmaking. It "says" something about intensity, energy, urgency - just can't do it with a D90, you get this sort of "just entered warp drive" effect. I'd have to say that's my biggest disappointment with DSLR video - you just can't be as "frenetic" as you might need for a given shot.

But there's a sort of soft & pretty look, with blown out highlights and short DOF, and some grain, that's been a part of my still shooting style forever (and I lost the damn grain when they killed all the fast tungsten films!!!) The D90 is the closest I've come to that look with affordable video gear. I'm kinda smitten with it. For now anyway...

I first bought my D90 with the video in mind. I have a LetusMini and a number of Nikon lenses I've collected so it just seemed natural to get a D90. After shooting some footage I found out like many have that it's not a sharp image and got a bit bummed out about it but quickly realized that the image is sweet and with great color.

Along the way I had been taking stills and a friend of mine saw them and asked if I would shoot(stills) a concert of his band. I got paid!! Which got me thinking about trying to make some money with my D90 and start saving money for the next best thing from Nikon.

I'm really interested in what Nikon is going to do with the update to the D700, if they do it. The D300s is a nice camera but not much different from the D90. So, I'm continuing with my D90 shooting stills and clips working on my photo/cinematic skills.
