After much lurking here and reading about the various hood loupes that are available for DSLRs I decided I could assemble one myself.

Here is the link to the UN ProLoupe 3x magnification screen loupe (UNX-8506) that I bought:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370114889061&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_3387wt_941

I have combined it with a cheap pop-up shade for my camera (Canon 500D/T1i) like this:
http://www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=5163142

I simply "press fit" the loupe hood over the "popped up" shade and taped over the light leaks to make my own Zacuto Z-Finder-like screen hood. I have attached photos of the assembled hood. In one of the photos the glass in the pop up shade appears cracked... but I can assure you that it is not.

Best of all once assembled it just snaps in place over the viewfinder eyepiece mounting tabs. No velcro or tape needed on the camera body! I can slip it on and off in seconds which is great when I'm frequently switching between stills and video.

And since the loupe is the same dimensions as the screen I can see the entire screen through the loupe and none of the buttons are blocked.

This hood makes manual focusing during video so much easier and even helps to stabilize the camera.

All this cost less than $60. The other low price option out there is the Hoodman Hood Loupe but it has no magnification and attaches to the camera body by way of rubber bands. My ProLoupe has 3x magnification just like the Zacuto (albeit without any diopter adjustment).

Damn, that just might work. How's your eyesight? Are you farsighted at all? Just wondering about the lack of diopter adjustment.

It works just fine for me with contacts or with eyeglasses. I'm nearsighted BTW.

Thanks much. I may get this. I wonder how it compares to the sock loupe however which is said to have GREAT optics and an odd design that some like while others don't:

The shade attachment is made for the XSI and I assume it is pictured here in the thread on your Rebel T1i. I wonder how it will fit on the 7D aor 5DII.

You simply need to purchase a pop up shade for the 7d or 5d to make this work.

As for the sock loupe. I did look into it but it still required you to stick something onto the camera with adhesive.
Plus even the sock loupe is more expensive than my hood loupe.

.

I went to your link and tried to search, but I don't see that they offer the sunshade for the 7D or 5DII, only the 450D/XSI

I only posted that link as a reference. Mine was not purchased from that link either. I would do a google search for a pop up shade for your camera.

The screen size of the 500D/T1i and the 7D are the same.

Looks nice, is there any ebay sellers who can send that 3x loupe worldwide?
