A friend of mine built this. It works alright. It's worth making if you can't get one if the big boys' toys.
It's funny how the link to this site is being posted on so many forums even tho it's so old. Must've been because it was Slashdotted. I built one of these over 2 years ago. It's a good starting point, and a good "trainer" to help learn the basics of using a handheld stabilizer. But homebuiltstabilizers is definitly awsome.

These are the original SteadiCam patent papers. They include detailed pics of the stabilization arm, as well as other parts.
I'm definately looking hard at this!
