View Full Version : Finding z-finder hard

Hey,

I've had the Z finder a few days now and am finding it hard to usage. When I don't have it on, my LCD screen is small and I have to squint a little, but the quality is high enough to get accurate focus.

With the z finder I'm finding the LCD is too soft to do that, I'm never sure when I've achieved critical focus.

I've tried changing the diopter and no dice so far. It's better if I move my eye from the cup and back a fraction, but I would've thought that that was the point of the diopter, to correct that.

Anyone have any solutions?

Hi Andrew,

Please email me directly mandy@zacuto.com and I can assist you with this. Do you wear reading glasses?

I have a Z-Finder on my Nikon D3s. Here is my experience.

It took me about two minutes to realize that the Z-Finder is a big help, although he natural LCD on the camera is not that bad in some cases. I can see to focus. Once I got over the worry about sticking anything on my new D3s, it was cool. It works as advertised. There is one problem Zacuto should address.

When you have the Z-Finder sticky-strip on the camera, you can no longer ever put on a protective LCD cover like most of us do to protect the LCD screen. So PLEASE Zacuto:

Produce a snap-on cover (that goes on our stick-on snap-on base) that is clear and ‘somehow’ protects the LCD from nose press and whatever else we happen to get on the LCD. Then we could snap on and off the clear cover or put on the Z-Finder.

Do you see any of the pixels when looking at the LCD thought the Z Finder? How easy is it to nail focus with it?

It is a real help to me when I have to nail focus, because the standard LCD screen is just what you see: a nice hi-res screen, but you can’t magnify it to be sure.

Can you add a Giottos Scott glass LCD protector before you attach the Z Finder?

@Bill:
There is very little space left around the LCD so it will depend on how large it's border is. Putting the z-finder mounting frame over the screen protector might not work since you'll be pressing and pulling on it all the time.

I asked the people at zacuto about if I needed to remove my screen protector on my 7D, before mounting the zfinder frame and it was an astounding yes.

the OP is right about the fact that after the Zfinder is on the viewing now is a little soft. its the LCD's that are failing at this point. it would be great if these LCD has twice the resolution but they dont. i think the focus experience it still way better with the Zfinder. to the OP...just give it a chance and youll probably come to appreciate it more than trying to just use the LCD by itself.

i think the Zfinder is still the very best by far at grabbing focus on a DSLR. couldnt live without it!

For those discussing an additional LCD protector, you do realize that the glass on the LCD of the 5D2 is completely self-replaceable, and not even for that much money right? Anyway, some folks don't realize that, but once you do, at least for me, I don't worry about it anymore. If it ever gets that messed up, you can just replace it. Just saying...

The camera LCD is very misleading. Images appear sharp that really are not. I use the Cavision viewfinder and it does indeed make a softer less pleasing image but I can tell much more accurately when something is in focus.

Yeah I'm having difficulty with focus and finding my Z-Finder a bit too soft on my 7D. I was thinking that it might be because of the LCD screen protector. I had the screen protector on already before I got the Z-Finder. It is gonna a be a bitch to get it (the protector) off now with the mount. Can anyone please confirm that the screen protector is causing a softness issue with the Z-Finder? Anyone please?

Cheers.

I love my Zacuto Z-Finder. I find that i tend to underexpose my shot when using it though as the image appears brighter in the Z-Finder when shooting than after I've uploaded it onto my computer. I now compensate for that when shooting with it..
