The bottleneck is your drive. It is not the CardBus bandwidth, that I can guarantee you, because I've seen a 64GB card offload to a SATA RAID in 10 minutes. And that wasn't even an E card, that was an A. A full 64GB E card should be able to offload in 7 minutes. A full 16GB E card should be able to offload in less than 2 minutes.
Copy to a RAIDed set of drives and you'll see your transfer speed at least double, and maybe quadruple, depending on the speed of your RAID.

I don't use the Mac at all, so if it performs similarly to a cheap windows box or not is something I can't be sure of. But on my Lenovo laptop I get the type of transfer times I'm talking about, through a direct PCMCIA slot connection.
The 10 minutes to offload a 64GB "A" card was done on a Mac Pro using a PCD35 slot reader, copying to a three-drive SATA RAID.
