Production Log

12-4-09
Went location scouting and got our main scene figured out and the open scene.
Fixing up the script now that i have all my ideas and story lines laid out....

12-6-09
Got the storyboards started and starting to work out this script and get it more compact. Not used to this 6 min time length but I can handle.
I have my make up team and crew ready names will be up by the end of the week...

12-22-09
Had pre production meeting and setting up a date for our table reading. We're also planning on adding an extra date so we have Jan 9th,10th,11th for shooting.

1-3-10
Reorganized the storyboard cards and getting gear ready for next weekend. Also trying to figure out which camera we should use. It's still up in the air right now.

1-6-10
Table reading and got everything set for shooting. Did a few tests and decided to shoot on hvx with an adapter. Got our schedules and my call times all down. We have two locations and the second one has a certain time frame so our schedule is crucial.

1-10-10
Day of shooting. Got most of the shooting done we still have one more scene to shoot at a different location. Don't know when that'll take place depends on everyones schedule.

1-13-10
After shooting in that house that was probably 30 degrees at best we decided to do our night shoot on a night when it's not gonna be super cold. Hopefully we'll have a date for that picked out soon.

3-2-10
Everythings finally done and have the poster up...

Hoping to have a meet and greet with my entire cast and crew this weekend or next. It's not that many people but I love when i can get everyone together to do a table reading and get everything straight.

Rodney V. Smith
12-06-2009, 03:27 PM
You have any cast photos yet? Would be nice to see who you're working with.

12-06-2009, 04:45 PM
Nobody has headshots? Are you using friends or real actors?

MSpencer
12-06-2009, 04:52 PM
real actors. i just don't wanna use the ones i have. i personally don't like head shots they're kindof boring haha. i wanna get them more in the style of the movie... it's not like the aliens or anything.

Thanks i'm hoping to have a different one up soon... i've been to busy getting everything ready cause i fly out to colorado for like a week and a half and the day i get back we start shooting. so I have to have all pre production done by the 23rd... Which just so happens is my birthday...

12-09-2009, 08:57 AM
Ow. Scheduling a shoot around Christmas is suicide by family. Major ow. Wish you luck though, you plucky adventurer...

MSpencer
12-09-2009, 09:02 AM
yeah scheduling is killing me right now. I've got barely anytime and we have our days planned out and the building we're shooting in is being completely smashed and fixed up by.... here's the killer.... End of February. so we've gotta get everything done and make sure we won't need any extra shots. Also i've got a pregnant wife and a 2 year old haha so this is gonna be some fun.. BUSY BUSY BUSY...

Rodney V. Smith
12-09-2009, 09:25 AM

Cool! Congrats! Praying that you guys are all well, and that the complications aren't an issue this time!

MSpencer
12-11-2009, 03:19 PM
well lets hope. last time they had nothing to do with the baby it was just a very bad time to get gull stones. and that triggered pancreatitis and well it led to about two months of recovery but this time she has no gull bladder so that should all be solved :D. thanks everyone.. oh

P.S. - Shot some test footage and well it's looking pretty good.

MSpencer
12-17-2009, 12:17 PM
Got my story boards all layed out onto cards and changing them around trying to decided our ending cause right now we have like two endings.

I'll probably make a longer version for myself cause the story seems hard to cram into 6 mins but i'll pull it off somehow.

What sort of gear are you going to shoot this on.

MSpencer
12-25-2009, 10:06 PM

Rodney V. Smith
03-01-2010, 11:33 PM
Dude, it's a great start. Just being SEEN is an obstable sometimes. You just made some people's "must see" lists based on the poster alone. Do you have a Facebook page set up? If you don;t while you're waiting for the upload, go out and create one. Upload the poster, details about the movie and then invite all of your friends to come see, and make sure to link back to your thread and to betrayalfest. Make sure everyone you know has a chance to see this movie.... with no audience, this is all just an act of masturbation.

MSpencer
03-01-2010, 11:37 PM
well i'm not a big facebook person... but maybe i'll figure something out. but i'm glad you like the poster. i'm hoping to be on the must see list.. :)

well i'm not a big facebook person... but maybe i'll figure something out. but i'm glad you like the poster. i'm hoping to be on the must see list.. :)

It's all about promotion. You can have the page for your movie without people being in your personal life. It;s at least a presence and it's taking a presence in the online social networking community. Facebook is less daunting than DVXUser and is a good gateway for people to follow through.

MSpencer
03-01-2010, 11:43 PM
alright well i'll work on that facebook page and when i got it up i'll link everyone... thanks rodney...

Congrats on getting your film in! I like how you portrayed the passage of time at the start with the jump cuts and using the drum as a clock. Overall, the music was actually quite good. That said, the intro goes on way too long. We’re more than a third of the way through a 6 minute film, and all we know is the main guy had a bad nights sleep, smokes and has a broken tv.

Dialogue is a little boomy in the apartment. And it’s rather expository, I think as a consequence of leaning solely on Christian during the intro. Rather than just have the two guys explain what happened, I would have liked to have seen you shoot the incident with the girl, show the two making promises, then go into Christian having a rough sleep/getting his regrets, leading to their confrontation.

The photography is nice, with some good setups/framing. I like the set – that apartment is pretty cool. I like the overall tone/look you’ve given to the film as well. Thanks for putting this up.

The film was well technically well constructed but only perseverance got me past the beginning.

Nearly 2 minutes to get out of bed, have a smoke, have a drink and realise your TV is still broken. Too slow. It lets down the rest of it.

The rest picked up nicely. Well done.

I agree with fluffy on the beginning but everything after that was just fantastic. That location was AMAZING and the acting was great. I loved how you did the head shot and the end. If you cut there I did not see it. If found it powerful and it is one of my favs so far. Great effing job!!

Good job overall.

I agree with the previous comments about the beginning. It would have been a great opening for a much longer film if you had opening credits during that first 2 minutes, so that's what I liked about it. But for a 6 min film it was too long.

I like the lighting in the interior scenes. Very good. I felt the end could have been tightened up a little bit, crossing the dialog onto the other shots so it didn't seem so choppy.

yeah the beginning was too long for a short film... last shot was executed awesomely... i think i heard either a mic or camera sound at one point and the overall sound could have improved so a good sound guy would have gone a long way... would have liked more tenseness in the actors cuz whatever happened in the past sounds like a really really effing big deal and i felt like the characters would have been more worked up and stressed out over it... great work on the lighting! that apartment was sick!

You have to love this guy's apartment. I get the feeling that the dismal state of life that these guys have found themselves in is due in large part to this evil act they've committed way back when.

It does take too much time to get into the heart of the story; I think that you could pretty easily fit this story into a minute and a half. I agree that there's potential to spice this up with some visual references to the girl and what they did to her.

I agree the beginning is too long. I was surprised to see a record player, I thought he was going to shoot up. The acting was superb if he was playing a lifeless doper, which I think he was. Both guys did a really good job. The set, lighting and makeup were perfect. Sound was a bit off, and when Christian puts on the record I thought the record should play, changing the music.

Good job well, well done.

thanks everyone for the comments. yeah i kindof thought the beginning did drag on a bit. we kindof kept changing the idea of kindof how to pull it all off and then right after we finished shooting that day the room was ripped down so we couldn't really shoot in the room anymore. hence why it's also a one way phone conversation haha.

but thanks for commenting.

Loved your flick. Loved the location (rat hole apartment look) and the only thing that would have made this really, really cool for me would have been a slow motion of the shot going into his head and his head tilting back.

Like as soon as the gun fired... BAM!!! right into slow motion there.
oh man... I would have kicked my wife out the bed for that one! lol....

haha we had a few different test shots. the directors wife does effects and we were gonna do a full face shot of him getting blasted but kindof ran out of time to get the rig together and test it out and when the apartment was getting torn down. we had like a few days window of time to shoot before it was ripped apart.

maybe on the next one... thanks though. glad you liked it...

man everyones short is real good. this is no exception.

Spencer, good job dude. i liked the actors a lot, the dialogue and writing, and especially the location!
the location is the ultimate ripped up drug den.

i like the ending, the gunshot, no complaints. ok one suggestion: just... the begining.
the jump cuts were a bit off for me, they didn't feel natural. and the intro jump cut scene goes a long time before the short REALLY starts. that's just my opinion, but it's important to note
because people have short attention spans when viewing shorts. but i stuck through the intro and i was pleasantly surprised so great job!

good film!

way too long beginning though. it sort of went on forever and i might've even given up except for that room had a sad life of its own and if you found that place and used it then you must have something else in this film thats going to show up. and show up it did.

good find on the pay phone too! it's not easy to find one these days.
i thought the acting was fine. the one dude, man, he looked like such a burn out! he did a nice job. and the murderer sort of ... snapped... i'd imagine a real murder would look like this... so good work there!

the music is spot on too. kinda bumpy.

i got no idea what they did to someone but i don't really want to know!

again, good flick!!

i think your the first person who doesn't want to know... we kindof left that gap in the script for you guys to figure out. we either wanted to give away one of two things.. what the secret was or who he told. cause both of those would be a huge factor. and we decided to let it slip but let you kindof think what could've been that bad.

Story: I liked it. Simple but you let us fill in the blanks. Good stuff.

Acting: The acting seemed pretty good. I especially liked the guy you opened with. Both were quite good though and the casting choices seemed right on.

Technical: My first thought was... 'That blanket looks brand new, and clean!'. My second thought was that the opening lasted far too long. Once things got going I really got into it. This looked really nice. Shot and lit well, sound was pretty good.

Fix the pacing a tad and you'll really have something.

Interesting film. First of all, I love your shipwreck media intro. That is really, really cool. I liked the way you opened the film. That pan across really brings us into the character, makes our eyes go with the camera and settle into what we’re about to see. I think you’re a very motivated story teller – almost every shot and thing you did in this film was to help tell the story, I really liked that about this.

A few too many of those jumpy cuts in the beginning, I think. It worked really well at first. I liked the look of the film, at the place you shot at helped with the production value. Interesting walls, etc. Some great shots, cool tones.
The story was pretty interesting to me, one thing I didn’t like so much was a few of the lines. Especially “We had a promise” -- which stuck out too much for me. The “I know what I did, I’ve had to live with it...” part brought things back a bit, which was pretty good. Overall I enjoyed the story & script, it was good.
Your actors were good, I enjoyed their performances. The guy at the phone box sold the fact that he’d obviously tried to talk a few times, and the other guy played his character very well.

Memorable Moment

I really liked the bit where he goes to open the door, and just kind of flicks it and walks away. That was very motivated – and I think a lot of other filmmakers might have just had him stand at the door. This to me felt so in character, and so right for that moment in the film.

Overall I thought this was a very good film, I enjoyed it a lot. Congratulations.

I liked this, it was very clean and simple. The cinematography was nice, sometimes the focus was off for a little long for me. The actors and locations had really nice looks.

There was nothing all that bad about the story, or the way it was told, but it was a little simple. It felt like you could have thrown a wrench in, added more complications. He goes to shoot him but the guy shouts out "Wait!" and reveals something that keeps the other guy from killing him. Or sirens start just as the gun comes up, stopping him. I don't know, it just seemed a little cut and dry.

I too think the opening scene was a bit too long, if we had learned something vital to the the story I could see it but it didn't really convey that he had done anything but smoke a lot. That said I loved the location and the acting by the victim, I thought the other actor was good on the phone but I liked him less on the interior scenes. The look was cool and the story was interesting and I was drawn in despite the slow pacing of the first scene. Overall very good storytelling and I enjoyed it very much.

I love the color pallet you chose for this piece. The angles you chose were nice. I thought the makeup was a little too much on the first man, I found myself distracted by it rather than watching the story. The performance by your talent was a little forced at times, it seemed like they might have been projecting too much. I would have liked to see the actors bring it down to a point where they are almost talking to themselves, trying to convince themselves they aren't the bad guy in this.

In screenwriting we're told that the first 10 pages are the most important pages of your script -- I would say that equally the same of the first minute of a six minute short.

The story took way too long to get going, it felt like something that should be on YouTube and not in a fest. This one just didn't get it for me.

welp sorry charli you didn't like this one... can't please everyone.. some people liked it some people didn't... in the first minute we wanted to drive the fact he's alone and the room to us was a character in itself so giving it the respectable amount of screen time was needed... it asked for it..hehe... yeah it may have been abit longer then planned but no biggy.

The beginning of the film, while long, definitely set up the character you were going for. It gave us an idea of who he was, and what kind of struggles he's dealing with. The apartment was an excellent location for that as well. So, yes it was long, but I don't feel it was too long.

The only thing that really threw me here was some of the shakey camera work, especially in the apartment when both actors were talking. I get the time-lapse stuff in the beginning, but feel like it could have been spread out a bit further (i.e. maker the actor's positions more distinct) as the way it is now almost seems like a skipped frame or two... almost like a glitch.

But the actor's did a nice job here, and the story came around to answer everything we needed. I liked the imagery and scene at the kitchen table the best. Nice work.

Alot of really good stuff here, I am not going to go over the same issues everyone else has covered, loooooved the location, the tv was a good moment, and the looks of the 2 actors, I actually liked the apartment guy more before he talked, I didn't buy him quite as much then but still, not too bad. It feels like there are the parts in place here for a really great short instead of just a good one, too bad about the place being torn down! Again, good job man!

There was definitely a few other movies that took a minute or two to get into the story and then a big let down...So I dont feel bad about our slow build up. We tried to set the tone and then drop a bomb very fast. I'm happy with intensity at the end. Im not sure that if we had more time we would have done it much different

Breach of Faith

Review: Mr Spencer you have an impressive moody production there and over all I like it. The tattooed guy adds a lot of flavor to the film and that house.... man my production designer would murder someone for that room.

Story: Once it got moving the story was pretty straightforward and effective. Nicely told. Your pacing leave a lot to be desired. I know you;ve been beaten over the head with it so I won't belabor the point.

Technical: Great lighting, nicely framed and shot, informed camera movement, thoughtful blocking. Good stuff. Would have liked to have seen more sngles on the gun though. Some closeups and inserts never hurt in editing.

Acting: The tattooed guy was a lot stronger than the Johnny Depp dude. He really didn't seem to believe what he was saying and it should have been the entirety of his existence. His delivery and mannerisms weren;t the ones of someone who has betrayed his childhood friend. Now your other dude, i totally believed him. He imbued the character with life. Didn;t quite like how he found the gun, should have been more accidental there, but he rolled with it.

WrapUp: It was a good story and I enjoyed it. The payoff was sharp and brutal, true to real life actions and very in the moment so I respect you for realizing that and going to that place. You have a nice production here, one that you should be proud of. Just be a little tighter on the edit and your pacing and you'll have a much better film for it.

PS: I;d love to see your storyboards. Must have been quite some thought put into them.

hahaha well first off i can't lay out stuff ahead of time cause when i'm there in location everything always changes on me.. so if i storyboard stuff out it'd end up coming off different. wanna look at something look at my script... it's normally ripped to pieces, i put camera placement in my actual script so that i know what i'm doing and then all the notes on the side are probably more then the actual script and i draw dumb little kindof storyboard pictures and x's and o's it looks like a football play sometimes. haha i do more camera blocking then storyboards

Storyboards tend to "lock me down" creatively.

That's how i feel about them. cause when you in the actual mood and shooting you just go with the flow. i feel so much more comfortable going off my shot list and then working from that rather then story boarding.

Storyboards tend to "lock me down" creatively, hence never wanting them... I do make a detailed shot-list, with my DP.

I used to think like that.. to let things be more organic, but see, I'm addicted to shooting.. so storyboards actually helped to fill a gap and then I could really take a look at the shots as DP and Editor and tweak the boards to my liking. I actually found that some shots I had thought were great just couldn't work because of the rigging involved... or shots that crossed the line or character space. Didn't hamper me creatively at all, just helped me to have a more efficient shoot and at my current level, efficiency is crucial. Iit doesn't work for everyone of course. There is no one cureall for that, but it is somehting that each of us should consider at some point instead of dismissing it out of hand. If anything you learn that you hate the storyboarding process...

What I liked about this film the most was the way that you could tell what Christian did was eating him apart, like maybe he thought telling someone was going to make him feel better, but it ended up making it worse. Also loved the locations and the rhythmic editing in the beginning.

I think there was some points where you could have ramped up the tension a little bit, because I didn't feel like the end came out of somewhere, but it sure escalated pretty quickly. Little things like Christian being more weary of Tommy coming over, maybe Tommy locking the door on his way in, stuff like that. Great way to mask the gun effect too, i'd much rather see that than some cheesy VFX. Physical effects FTW!

HAHA yeah i know what your saying. it's funny cause the next one we straight up used cheesy VFZ cause we thought it'd be funny. but our directors wife works at a effect studio and well we had a rig that you'd actually full on see the entire shot but decided to go with that just so we wouldn't have to rig up the entire shot.. i'm not sure if you can catch it i tried to do seamless shots but the gun shot is actually three shots all pushed together.

Matt, I kind of watched on one screen while jotting down some notes on the other. Take my thoughts with a grain of salt. (This a 2nd viewing for me.)

Killer poster, killer title card for Shipwreck.

I didn't like the jump cuts on the bed. Once he moves to the table, it gets better.
It was mentioned by another poster to get things moving in the 1st minute, this seems to be a problem. Kind of a lag at the start.

GREAT location. Gritty, seedy....works well.

Hey we both had a turntable in our films. RIGHT ON!

I also see some similarities in the carry-on between our actors. EX: When he says "we were just kids" Reminds me of my "It was just a stupid band" in the delivery.

^Don't know if that's a good thing or bad! Your story was obviously a bit darker.

Nice exterior shots. Great DOF.
Interior sound suffered a little bit in parts. Kind of boomy. Focus issues in a shot or two.

Great sound swell at the end! The blood on the wall? Very cool.

The end came quickly for me. Usually with these fest entries I can kind of mentally pace when it's going to wrap....so I guess the gunshot was unexpected. If you were going for the element of surprise that's a good thing.

Overall very cool and a nice 1280 ratio, I don't know how you guys blow it up so big and it still looks good under 60mb.

Hardcore pride!
