In November 2009 DVXuser members were given the theme for their next annual Halloween Horror Fest – MONSTER FEST. New film discussion threads were created before scripts were even written, international collaborations began via the DVXuser forum, Skype, and email. Completed films will be uploaded in on March 5th, 2010 and will be available for viewing on March 6th. DVXuser fests are completely democratic. If the films are uploaded on time, are no longer than 6 minutes in length, include the DVXuser Leader, no more than 15 seconds of creditsand, and explore the theme of Betrayal, then they will screen. (official rules (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=191398))

Once the films go live, audiences and peer filmmakers begin viewing and rating. But that's only part of DVXuser fest. Much like a real world film festival, there's discussion and interaction between filmmakers and audiences via each film's discussion thread. The principle difference in this virtual fest and real world fests, other than lack of face-to-face interaction, would be that in many cases the discussion begins long before the screening. Members often create discussion threads for their films immediately after the next theme is announced. Over the course of the next three months they'll share their filmmaking trials and tribulations, ask for help from other members, and share their breakthroughs. During the festival, forum members post reviews, comments, and questions in each film's thread.

In 2005, DVXuser began hosting three online film festivals annually. The festivals are genre and theme related and completely democratic. If you upload your film, it was shot for DVXuser, it fits the theme, and meets a few technical requirements it will screen to a healthy online audience with each film receiving as many as 2,000 downloads, and views into the tens of thousands. The idea is to motivate, inspire, and give people a deadline. Prizes in gear soar into ten or twenty thousand dollars in value and have included HD cameras, cranes, camera stabilizers, gear bags, etc. Occasionally DVXuser fests have involved outside juries in an attempt to create greater opportunities and exposure for the filmmakers. This is something DVXuser hopes to make a regular occurrence. Traditionally the contest winners have been decided entirely by user vote. This was in keeping with the rebel spirit under which DXuser was founded. Site admins and moderators were reticent to leave the user-vote model behind, but also realized that their members could benefit from the type of industry exposure a panel of industry professionals could provide. Today the first round of voting at DVXuser is members only, winnowing down as many as 90 films to a more manageable 10 or so finalists. Members now rate any final films they haven't yet seen, and in 2007 for DVXuser's TIME FEST and again in 2009 for DVXuser's MONSTER FEST, a panel of outside jurors offered their take on the best of the fest. Out of the finalists, two categories of winners are chosen: the MEMBER VOTE winners, eligible for prizes, and the JURY VOTE winners, eligible for opportunities such as festival screenings, reviews, distribution, etc.

Around the conclusion of each festival, a theme is then announced for the next festival and members have about three months to make and upload their films. A natural, semi- official cycle has evolved where each Fall fest, coinciding with Halloween, is Horror related, each Winter/Spring the fest is more Human Drama (non-genre oriented), and each Spring/Summer comes Popcorn Fest, a fun driven blockbuster type fest. Perhaps most popular is the fall Horror Fest. In Winter/Spring Human Drama serves as the fortifying vegetables sandwiched between addictive junk food. As Summer comes the mood is lightened with Popcorn Fest.

Films created for DVXfests have gone on to screen at SXSW, TRIBECA, DELTA AIRLINES, SLAMDANCE, genre fests such as SHRIEKFEST in L.A., have appeared on the SYFY channel, SUNDANCE CHANNEL ONLINE, and have garnered member filmmakers outside work producing a web pilot for WARNER BROS. and working as consultants on small and large feature films in technical capacities

4. DVXuser.com
DVXuser.com was founded in July of 2003 by Jarred Land. When the Panasonic DVX100 came out, the first true 24p DV camera with a more filmic colors and look, it was a shot for indie filmmaking accessibility heard round the world, and it was the hot topic on many internet discussion boards. Frustrated by being a bystander on these boards, Land created DVXuser to discuss his favorite camera, but the site quickly grew to a multiple camera, filmmaking, and industry news community. Then Vancouver B.C. based, Land would ultimately relocate to Los Angeles in 2006, largely just to keep up with the demands of the growing site. Today the site is run by administrators Jason Ramsey and Barry Green with a host of spirited moderators.

Though there have been several breakthroughs in DV and HD cameras since the site’s inception, it retains the moniker DVXuser, referencing a still viable camera and its pioneer status in indie filmmaking. The brand DVXuser represents an indie-tech, shut-up and make your movie state-of-mind.
