Just won my auction for a black GH1 + 14-140 for 87100 yen, which is like... 650 euro. There's gonna be a whole lot of extra costs for shipping , handling and bank transfers, and I couldn't have done it without a mate in japan, but i'm pretty satisfied. I've been eyeballing this camera for months, including checking out this board on many occasions for footage samples and tips on lenses, UI figured waiting for a sensible price on the body+14-140 was the way to go, even though bodies went for way less then that, I want the silent AF when I'm filming. If you see the prices second hand 14-140mm lenses get, it must be a pretty sweet piece of machinery.

I'm also looking forward to getting some adaptors and screwing on old yardsale finds, or eastern european lenses.

And offcourse I've got to find my way around the japanes menu now.

Isn't that something a firmware update at some point could take care of? Beeing able to choose your language...

You can change the language in the menu.

Not on the GH1, I believe.

apparently, it's this big scam where they sell japanese only gh1's for way less in japan. maybe someone should jailbreak it.

yeah, definitely no changing the japanese menus to english. maybe one day someone will at least come out with a firmware hack just to do that because they sell bodies over there. but until then it's just learning which is really easy to do.

fortunately, the position and visual of all the icons is the same in English and Japanese versions so you can easily learn to use the Japanese version by reading the English manual download.

Guess after some time I'll have a very fragmented knowledge of Japanese. konichiwa, sayonora and a bunch of camera menu setting words.

How did you manage to get it so cheap?

well, that's just the raw auction price, then comes shipping and import tax etc etc. i'll give you the final price once I have the thing in my hands.

But apart from that, some scouting thought me that's about the price a second hand GH1 goes for on the japanese online auction sites. 650-750 euros.. bodies alone go for about 400 euros
