Is This Considered a Defect?

I recently discovered that on my Canon EF 50mm 1.4 USM lens, the focus ring travels past infinity. I've always had lenses you could trust to hit infinity on the head and really dislike having to be careful about infinite focus.

Is this something Canon could "fix" if I sent the lens in for repair? Is this a common thing with DSLR lenses? Is this a gr8 reason not to buy lenses off ebay?
