Hey I just got done importing some of my first P2 video into FCP, Imported video look's fantastic except for playing at 29.97fps.
I've had a tad of trouble rendering the video on a macpro, it takes a few sec/min.
And I also when exporting out of FCP the video has some lines across and playback is terrible.

Anyway I'm fairly new to importing and exporting footage from the p2 through Final cut.
So thought I would ask Is there a set standard when importing/exporting footage off the p2 and through FCP?

1. What's the "best" or "normal" Capture Preset when importing the footage?
I captured the footage into FCP at:
Video File Format: DVCPRO HD (1080i60) 1888x1062 FPS: 29.97

2. What's "best" or "normal" Sequence Preset when working with the footage?
I used DVCPRO HD-1080p24

3. What's "best" or "normal" export when exporting the footage from FCP?

I'm working on a interview documentary that when finished editing will be published to youtube, vimeo and burned on a DVD for a projector. Basically I just want to export the best pure 720p24 video I can, while still having the ability to edit in FCP smoothly.

Thanks for your time.

your first problem is you shot interlaced at 29.97 and youre trying to edit in progressive "24" so youre going to have to render each time you change something.

if you want to work in realtime, your timeline settings must match that of your footage.

also, what mac and what kind of drive are you working off of?

W, Thanks for the help.

So basically it would be better to shoot at shoot at 720p/24p and keep it there instead of shooting at 1080i/24p and down covering to 720p/20p?

Sorry, I'm still new at this. But trying to learn as much as I can.

I'm working off a 2x 2.66 ghz Dual-Core Intel/3gb memory MacPro with the files on an external fire wire hard drive connected to another HD. Final Cut is a little outdated with Version 5.1.4

To anyone, Basically what HD setting do you recommend shooting at? And then what Capture Preset,Sequence Preset and final export is recommended?

Well you can shoot 1080/24p and de-interlace, but why 720 (in which case it would be easier to shoot straight in 720.
To me the HVX and HPX170 are wonderful 720p cameras. When you go into the full HD world, it gets a bit tricky :)

Never deinterlace 24p. Remove pulldown, but never deinterlace. They're not the same thing.

firewire400 or firewire800?

firewire 400

Thanks everyone for the assistance, it helped a ton. I guess I wanted to shoot 1080 and downgrade to 720 but anyway I was able to get the footage exporting at the quality I wanted.
I still have a hard time with the codec in FCP with rendering time. All just need to keep testing and see what I can get. It just sucks to wait 40sec every time you move a clip.

firewire400 is one problem. it can work. but NOT WELL. in the video biz, data transfer speed (as well as drive speed) is a VERY SIGNIFICANT performance factor.

id imagine if you move to firewire800, you will see a noticeable improvement in render time. and take it a step farther, if you add an esata card and start using esata drives you'll see yet another more dramatic performance improvement.

Shark,

I can't help but think your timeline is not matching the video you shot. It should require no rendering when moving a raw clip on the timeline. Please double check your settings.

Hey thanks so much for the help! Thought I'd give you an update, I went out and shot some test footage 720p/1080i under different settings and imported it using easy setup. Using the correct preset I was able to match up the settings from FCP with the footage.
I was able to get 720p/24fps & 1080i 30fps footage into FCP without having the render, and the final export is perfect!

One problem, I'm unable to align the settings for 1080i/24fps video. There are no presets for 1080i/24fps only 1080p/24fps and I've already shot the video for this project.

I'm working on FCP 5.1.4. Under audio/video settings> capture preset> DVCProHd - 1080i60 48kHz>Edit>QuickTime Video Settings: It has it under 29.97 fps, I'd like to change that too 23.98 however it's in gray and unelectable. Can I change that? Only the digitizer is selectable and it's under {Missing} DVCPROHD 1080i60 the other option is none.

Is there a way to bering in 1080i/24fps video into FCP?

Jim, Thanks for the help.

I hate to sound like a broken record here but, The question is not what do I shoot on but how do I bring it into FCP.
