Hi all,

So wow wow wow have I been freaking out. I'm headed out to Bakersfield in about 4 hours from Tennessee and found out earlier today that my Duel Adapter has decided to crash/freeze Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard (NOT Snow Leopard) upon insertion into the PCMI slot on my MacBook Pro.

My card is set to "A" (and yes, I've tried "B"), and according to every source I've found (including Duel Adapter's tech support) there is no current driver through Duel Adapter for Leopard--it's "just supposed to work", HA!

Anyways, I have had ZERO trouble over the past month transferring footage multiple times a week and, of course, as I'm about 4 hours out from my flight the damned thing continues to crash my OS.

If you have ANY advice/recommendations/tips/tricks, etc on resolving the crash problem, PLEASE let me know. Otherwise, my plan at this point is to use FW400 to offload the cards to the laptop at a painfully slow rate and completely stopping the shoot upon each transfer (aka what you do without a Duel Adapter).

If you know of any way to get my hands on a working Duel Adapter in or near Bakersfield, CA by tomorrow Wednesday, Nov 11 I would be so, so, so thankful!

(for the sake of ridicule, I should note that I pride myself on checking for these sorts of things as far in advance of shoots as possible. Just INCREDIBLY crappy timing)

Thank you, thank you in advance for any help at all,

Alex

This will save you lots of time. Run into the local walmart or bestbuy and grab an off the shelf pc for 400 bucks. Use it for offloads then transfer masters to an external fat32 formatted drive and then return it to the store or sell it when you get home. Then you can trouble shoot your MAC with no deadline over your head.

Thank you so much Jason- I'm sitting in the airport right now and have arranged an overnight delivery through Duel Adapter's customer service to the shoot's destination. I'll report back with an update on the follow-thru. If i still have the issue or problems with delivery my first stop is Best Buy!

My Duel Adapter regularly freezes up my mac (OS 10.5.7) Same thing with my esata hard drive doc. I don't think Mac likes the xpress card devices...

It's not the Duel, it is Leopard. I went through the exact same thing, my Duel worked like a champ under Tiger, when I upgraded to Leopard (not Snow either), the Duel basically became useless. It mounts perhaps 10% of the time. Luckily my wife has my old PB G4 so I just steal it from her on shoot days. It sucks though, my nice newer MBP is useless for P2 shoots now. I will probably end up buying wifey a newer Macbook and will steal my PB G4 back from her for P2 shoots.

If I didn't already have the PB G4 available, I would be buying a cheap PC laptop as Jason suggested.

its funny. my 4gb 2.66 unibody MBPro (with "un-snow" leopard) worked 100% with my duel adapter.
that is sadly the machine that was stolen last friday. so who knows what will happen next.

out of curiosity, what model MBpro are you guys using and how much ram did you have?
i have heard something about a build that didnt like the duel if it had 4gb ram...

I had nothing but problems with the Duel adapter. I switched to a Panasonic PCD 20 I got on e-bay. The problems went away. One caveat however, Snow Leopard is a no-no.

MBP dual core Santa Rosa 2.2GHz with 10.5.8. And yes, I do have 4GB of RAM but I too had heard that has been solved. I should mess with it some more, maybe I can get it to work as WGZN has?

typing this just before I head out the door to go film...

Tried my Duel Adapter on a friends MB Pro with leopard before I left and it froze its OS as well. I called Duel's 24/7 tech support and told them this, and they agreed it was a defective Duel Adapter. Long story short, got an overnight delivery to the shoot location and now have a working adapter thanks to some great customer service.

The new Duel instantly recognized and I'm off to shoot...big thanks to Duel Adapters for the awesome job. hi-5!

jaopro, glad you got this figured out. I lost my faith in the Duel Adapter as a reliable field tool recently.
Feel so much better with a P2 Store.
P2CMS seemed to HATE the Duel and transfer very slowly, whereas FinalCut transferred at ok speeds with it.

Hey WQZN, saw the news about your theft in another post. Really sorry to hear that happened right on set. Hope it all works out.
