So after messing around with acad & my desktop tools I have drawn the blue prints to a lens shade / matte box that can be printed out on any card pref 250gsm or higher and put together in modules in under an hour.

It is no Chrozeil, but it is free and should 1: help with the flares, and 2: also look quite neat. I just thought I would get some feedback wether there is any interest in the pic then give out the file which at the moment is both in acad or corel format.

Haha, that's neat! Is it available in a weather proof version? =)

Matthew,
that looks great! I'd be interested in that file! I dont have autocad, but I do have 3ds max, I think I can open up an auto cad file in there?

Thanks,
Vince

..you could build it out of thin black plastic or black coated aluminum from a hardware store if you wanted a wetherproof version. just trace the cutout to the other material.

theos
06-30-2004, 09:09 AM
would need a little more care but yes . . . the material to use is up to you. A test in card does help though. It gives you the general idea of the workings. Vince, what about an eps or a freehand file. Max is not exactly a 2d printing programme (scale wise)

awsome ;D

definately would be interested in a metal/plastic version of this

Great work--it looks good. People forget that a matte box has two functions--shading the lens and holding filters--maybe three if you count impressing clients :). Since most DVXusers are not heavy filter users, the primary function is shading the lens. You don't have to spend $$$ for a good lens shade.

06-30-2004, 09:34 AM
I still think that with a slot cut into the design, a filter can be slid in and out of the box . . . that is step 2. Obviously no rotation but one step closer to 2.5 ;)

Fantastic.. good work! could almost be "disposable", build as needed lol.

Hey Jarred, I poped the dvxuser logo ontop, is that ok?

Barry_S
06-30-2004, 09:41 AM
Disposable matte boxes--that's what I was thinking. *If I squint a little at the pic, it looks like you've got a bellows baffle inside--nice touch. You need to pay Jarred the standard DVXuser licensing fees for the logo use on your product. ;D

OK – how do we get ahold of the AutoCAD file . . . ? I was looking to do exactly this myself, but if it’s already done . . .

BTW, sweet work. ;D

Matthew,
Yep a eps file would be great! I'm gonna first try it out on the hard paper stock then have my dad make it in plastic or metal. He loves metalworking, so maybe he'll like this project!

Thanks again,
Vince

Here are the pics I have taken. The file will follow. It is a corel draw file, what format would be best guys? BTW it is far from perfected so it will depend on your input.

Wow! :o Matthew. I thought it was the real deal at first glance. Nice job! Hey, I would love to make a link to it in the HBS site. So when you're done just send me the link to the coral file or whatever you will be presenting it in. Or just send the file and I'll put it up on the HBS server for those interested to download.

Let me know. It is nice DIY project. I love when people make the 15min fame list. ;D

You might also look at generating a DWF file from Acad. There's a free viewer for it:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=2787358

The DWF format is similar to PDF but is made for technical drawings.

Great work! Now, the eternal question -- can you design one that works with the Panasonic Anamorphic adapter?

theos
06-30-2004, 03:04 PM
yes we will, what would be cool is some measurements from an existing one, like the depth & inner measurements of the 'cone' as to clear all vignetting :P

Barry_Green
06-30-2004, 03:29 PM
According to www.biz-max.net, the dimensions of the anamorphic adapter are 4 13/16 x 4 3/8 inches (122mm wide x 110 mm high).

theos
06-30-2004, 03:31 PM
ah not the adapter, the clear view path, but i will work that out, just need some time. Tx barry

Barry_Green
06-30-2004, 03:43 PM
The "clear view path" ... you're referring to the angle of view, right? To avoid vignetting?

With the anamorphic attached, the vertical path is the same, but the horizontal will need to be 33% wider.

theos

right ;D

Hello. I don't post often sorry about that but today I would like to share my creation. It is a matte box that fits on the stock DVX100A sun shade. I made it out of a piece of a black plastic trash can. It will work great for people that use 72mm filters.

(1). I made a template out of cardboard then traced it on the piece of trash can then cut it out with an exacto knife.

(2). Once it was cut out I folded the corners and duct taped the ends together (I didn't go to the hardware store to get plastic glue yet).

(3). When that was done I cut slits *into the tabs so I could put a velcro strap throught it.

(4) Finally attached it to the sun shade and tighten the velcro strap and there you are, a thick plastic weather proof matte box that is the same color as the stock sun shade.

This project took about an hour to do. The good thing about the design is that it is simple and can be easily customized. You can make it longer, bigger, or etc.

enjoy

Matthew - I've created PDF versions of the files. They are each only 123K or less in size. Do you want them for posting?

Barry_Green

Matthew:

For the anamorphic adapter, here's a guide that may help you figure out how to make the pieces.
http://www.icexpo.com/dvx100/AnamorphicLensShade.jpg

It's a scan of a cheesy hand drawing, employing the lowest possible of low-tech techniques. I set the camera up with the adapter, and used some playing cards to simulate the sides of the lens shade, and viewed the output on a computer monitor with full underscan. Then I just slid the cards sideways until they didn't show up on the frame anymore. I then traced that angle/layout, scanned it at 150DPI, and here it is. So it's entirely unprofessional, but maybe it'll give you the info you need to make the anamorphic version! ;D

That is totally cool and I really appreciate your efforts and your genorous nature in converting the many file formats and sharing them with us.

We could have a pull string attached to the cardboard Barry chin and when we need something answered we could just pull the string and there would be pre-programmed responses.

I wonder if we could have a EIGHT BALL BARRY? Just shake it and wait for him command?
