View Full Version : Sony to join the DSLR Race??

I didn't see this posted anywhere but it's still just a rumor site. Supposedly Sony will be announcing a new camera on November 18th. It supposed to be the direct competitor to the Panasonic GH-1 (4/3) with full HD recording. I'm not much for rumors but I hope this is true.

I read an interview with a Sony spokesman some month ago, he was asked if and when Sony will join the video DSLRs and while the guy didn't provide a clear answer, he said that IF they do, they'll "do it right". Sounds quite promising.

I heard that this IS true. I don't know about WHEN, but my friend that works at a camera shop chatted with a Sony rep, and he said that Sony WAS releasing a camera (HDSLR) that would smoke Canon and Nikon. (We'll see about that...) No less...I'm excited to have another player in the game. :) Go Sony!

Yeah the internet is eat up with this rumor. I even got pictures http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t137/rosestar77/Full-sensor-camcorders-from-Sony-Al.jpg

I like this one were Sony is looking to be the RED killer:

http://photorumors.com/2009/07/13/more-sony-dslr-rumors/

And this one with the response that shows a release schedule, that promises the "Revolutionary" Alpha 1000 by 2011.

http://photorumors.com/2009/06/19/back-to-sony-dslr-with-video/

Of course, I would advise waiting and seeing.

No.

No.

But hey, I saw it on the internet... it's gotta be true!

I would not be surprised if Sony did come out with a killer camera, they've been known to do it before. I just would wait and see what they announce. I think that the next two years are gonna be a watershed time for video camera technology and everybody will be jumping in to the fray.

At some point, a company is gonna say "f*ck it" and just stick a 35mm lens mount on a $1000 video camera with internal image flip and sell it for $2000 (without a lens) and the crime rate will skyrocket as all of us sell (or knock off) our grandmothers to buy one.

11-14-2009, 05:46 PM
well mate , the canon xl1 already did that ten years ago but the only problem was the 7x focal magnifier - a thousand dollar video camera has a 1/3 or even 1/4 " sensor ! So it ain't the lens , it's the sensor size that makes for the effects !

there will no DSLR be announed tomorrow :(

What will be?

HHL
11-17-2009, 01:07 PM
It may not be tomorrow, but my sources say that Sony WILL be joining the DSLR party. I heard that it would take place inside the next 3 months. This info came from a Sony rep to a camera store in the US, (Utah).

There will be a "business solution" announced tomorrow, might be a videocamera but obviously no DSLR.
But the newest thread on sonyalpharumors says

"
One of our readers sent us the following “rumor” coming from Japan:
- Sony will unveil a Camera with “Alpha” brand.
- Made for high-end movie with Alpha lenses.
- The camera is not compact."

all rumors though

Barry_Green

Sounds promising. If it's made for "high end movie" -- that's what we want!

Hopefully it is a "high end movie" camera- would Sony do that to preempt RED's Nov. 30th announcement? More links:

http://43rumors.com/ft2-latest-rumors-about-sonys-gh1-competitor-the-rumor-says-it-is-not-a-gh1-competitor/

Barry_Green

Sony already has high-end movie cameras that outperform the Red in many ways. They're just astonishingly expensive (F35 is, what, $350,000? 10x the cost of a Red kit?)

So the high-end is covered. As to whether they'd produce something to compete with Red at Red's price bracket, that's a whole different question.

But the rumors seemed adamant about a GH1 competitor.

Poking around Sony's Japan www.sony.jp website I found the image attached below.

(The graphic might not be there if it "rotates" with other images.)
http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http://www.sony.jp/professional/&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&usg=ALkJrhgzYnYDGZhKsnkdprhu8ARDJiYcUA

On Sony's site, when you click on it, it takes you to this page (Google Translate version):
http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http://www.sony.jp/professional/event/info/pb20091118.html%3Fref%3DTOP&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&usg=ALkJrhiIwJPmKSUwt6JAwYm9Svi75pkryA

So, it seems some kind of "video" cam is being announced tomorrow, but Sony isn't saying what, yet.

It doesn't look like a removable lens though. But it it were the 3/4 sensor with a decent zoon, one with a range good enough to be fully complemented by a wide angle adapter and a telephoto adapter... that could be very good.

What are the possible codecs Barry?

Barry_Green
11-17-2009, 04:49 PM
Interesting. Looks EX-ish. I wonder if they're finally gonna make the jump to AVCHD, and put out an HMC150 competitor at a lower price point than the EX?

Based on that form factor alone, I would expect this to be a 1/3" version of the EX using AVCHD or possibly XDCAM-EX.

That looks like a built-in lens, which means probably no large chip.

USLatin
11-17-2009, 04:51 PM
HMC150 competitor? I obviously missed some of the posts, sorry. I thought this was supposed to be a "high end cinema"... well, somewhere in that direction.

Barry_Green
11-17-2009, 04:54 PM
Look at the picture -- that doesn't look like "high end cinema" to me, that looks like a traditional 1/3" - 1/2" handheld video camera, more like an FX7 or EX1.

Barry_Green
11-17-2009, 04:56 PM
Reading the translated google page, I expect this to be a new tapeless low-end camera. They talk about how the theme is "the next generation flow" (implying something beyond the current tape generation) and the "latest equipment Totaruwakufuro HD file-based system". To me that says tapeless memory card recording, so probably a 1/3" HMC150 competitor using AVCHD to MemoryStick (keeping with the "next generation" theme) or XDCAM-EX to either memorystick or SxS.

The will ALSO be demonstrating their 4K/3D high-end cinema workflow, but surely that won't be anchored by a 1/3"-looking video camera...

It could conceivably just be a generic "camcorder" graphic Sony is using as a placeholder until they reveal the real product ... but who knows?

Barry_Green

(and I have no idea what Totaruwakufuro means, and neither does Google...)

Barry_Green

Usually the place to go is on the manufacturer's site to the "press room". Anyone have a link to that so we can get some translated google docs flowing when they hit the press room?

Peter J. DeCrescenzo

"Totaruwakufuro" sounds like a line from "Tropic Thunder"! :-)

(Whoops, sorry, wrong country.)

USLatin

Barry, I did see the picture. I am thinking of the Panasonic announcement of the their Ultra codec camera, and DSLRs offering large sensors. So an $8,000+ Prosumer that incorporates one of those elements, a big leap forward yet crippled so as not to compete with the real high end. I just see a step in between developing, but I wouldn't know as much about trends in cameras so I was asking you.
