Its not really clear but its not black either. I just won it over the weekend on Ebay. You use dry/erase markers with it. Anyway my question is, how do you intstall a light on it to use it at night. I think Jarred posted a while back a picture of one he made with a little light on the back that would illuminate the front of the clapper. What kind of light did you use? What did you do to get power to the little light?

I think Jarred used some flat electroluminescent material--look for the kits on eBay.

This might be the one he used--or at least pretty close.

We usually use one of the battery operated fluorescents or small flashlight to either backlight or front light it. If you needed to attach it, I guess they could be taped.
They have some on eBay:

For $3 I couldn't resist it. :)

yeah.. those EL sheets are pretty sweet though, much slimmer than flourescents and a much more even light, and way cooler.

I just love *winning* things on eBay. ;)
In fact, lately I've *won* nearly $2,000 :o in Beaulieu Super8 and 16mm film cameras. It's so much fun *winning* I can't stop!!!

it would be nice if I can win some lights!

You can. Like I said, all you have to do is pay more than anyone else in the world is willing to, at that particular moment...
... also, research completed auctions to see what that type of equipment has been selling for. That way you'll know what the "market value" really is, and you'll be better prepared to make a realistic bid.

I *won* a mint R-16 with a super clean Angenieux 12-120mm lens w/metal lens cap, 12V DC battery adapter, 2 working handgrip batteries, battery charger, original manual, fully functioning for $650.
So, now I'm going to do something I haven't done in years... shoot motion film. It'll be my li'l hobby within a hobby within a career. *;)
I also *won* (2) super sweet 5008S rigs with *lots* of extras and accessories... one even came with a Pelican case with pre-shaped foam in it for camera and accessories. The other is a 5008S Multi-Speed and came with filters, masks, macro adaptor, and more.
Also, *won* another nice 4008ZM II.
Next up... *winning* a 4008ZM IV. Then, I'll sell (lose?) one 4008ZM II and one 5008S that I've owned for several years and hopefully get some money back.
Afterwards, I'll still have (2) 4008, (2) 5008S, and (1) R-16 cameras.
Oh yeah, then I'll buy a sheet of eLeCtRoLuMiNeScEnT material for my slate too. *;)

Terry, you're mad for the Beaulieu cameras, aren't you. Can't say I blame you, they're works of art. Hey, instead of buying that sheet of eLeCtRoLuMiNeScEnT material, why don't you buy an 8 plate flatbed editor :-).

Speak of the devil! I just won a 1k Arri Light on Ebay! I have been looking for a 1k for about a month now. Now if I can get a couple of 650's and maybe a 300, I will have me a little light kit!

Ha! That's funny. I saw that 1K and thought about bidding on it, but I had Beaulieu on the brain. :)
I'm glad you got it!

Yeah, I'm regressing back to 1960's-70's technology, but they're sweet cameras and in *pristine* condition.
Now, I have to save money for film, processing, and transfer to tape which is where the real money goes.
I'll pass on the flatbed editor. *;) However, you probably could *win* one for the price of a sheet of eLeCtRoLuMiNeScEnT material.

How bright do those Electroluminescent sheets get? I may get some extra sheets for other stuff. I am guessing they are bright enough to shine through the clapboard since someone suggested that. I saw some D.I.Y. kits online but are there any already put together as far as the wiring goes? I am not good when it comes to wiring.

Terry,
Thats awesome..you are going to be selling one of the Beaulieu 4008's eh? PM me and let me know the price if you decide to sell. I have been looking for a good R-16 for the past year and you got that at a great price, nice find! What are your personal findings on Transfer Houses...any good ones in your opinion?

I just saw one on the www.filmtools.com site they are selling for $149.95! Thats messed up! I bought my clapper on Ebay for $76.20 and if I go and get those sheets and make it myself it will still be under $100!

I bought that mini clapper directly from Panavision for about $30 if I remember correctly, and that panel light cost $9.

I ordered one of those Electroluminescent sheets from Ebay and I just got it yesterday. I was a bit surprised that is only 6"X5". Its too small to put on the my clapper which is 12"X8.5". I feel like I wasted money on that kit because of its size. Where can I get a larger sheet to cover the back of the clapboard?
Zoomforce
07-11-2004, 08:38 AM
just do a google seach for the electro sheets.. they make them big enough, but they start to get expensive. You can also email the hong kong guys you bought the little one from and ask if they have a larger size.
But... this is where you gotta sit back and think. A large size probally will cost you at least $40 for the EL sheet if you buy it from the US. add the clapper and your at about $110. That $140 Filmtools clapper doesnt look so overpriced afterall does it?

Yea I know I was thinking the same thing! Great minds think a like! I may just have to cough up the $140 for it.

Yea I saw that mentioned on the Panavision site. What is a insert slate? Is it used for the same purpose?

Juat got mine, it's an illum-a-slate by Industry Advanced technologies in Thousand Oaks, CA. It is switch controlled, on, off or light controlled by the clapper.
