Actually not. A matte box is more than just a hood in front of the lens. They are designed to hold image control devices, especially filters, in front of the camera lens. They were originally designed to hold mattes, or opaque light blocks, in front of the lens, that kept part of a film image from being exposed. Then the film could be rewound and, with a matching counter matte (that covered the previously exposed film) a split screen/composite image could be made. This would be done for a split screen shot, or to use for architectural replacement, ect. That gizmo from B&H is a lens hood and is designed to keep extranious side light from hitting the lens, causeing lens flares.
