Okay,
So I have spent too much and the wife is getting upset so I have to hold off on the mattebox purchase. Some other members were suggesting using just a rubberized sun shade. i guess my question is this... could i use a polarizer for outdoor scenes and the rubber sunshade together or would i need to pick one or the other?
is the polarizer even a good idea for outdoor video scenes? and what brands should i look at for the polarizer...
it kinda sucks because i have a sigma and a canon lens and they are not the same size so i might have to buy a polarizer for both
Well, I just did a short with the 7d, and I kept the polo on for 85% of the time and the matte box on for 5%...
..And I'm a Matte Box fan.

Have you checked out filter sets like cokin (www.cokin.com)? You can buy an attachment for each lens size, then just buy whichever filters you need and they will work on both.

A circular polarizer should be a key part of any DSLR kit. Linear ones just aren't as useful. You can always find about ten ways to flag offending lens flares with things other than a matte box.
If you have lenses of various filter sizes, you could consider a filter holder system like the Cokin or Lee systems, where you can use adapter rings and not need to buy too many duplicate lenses.

A Polarizer does not do the same job as a mattebox.
They're two different items that work together.
You can use ANYTHING to block glare or sunlight.
They are two different pieces of equipment used for two different purposes. If I had the money for one or the other, I'd get a polo.

thanks for the advice on the adapter, didn't realize that was an option...
while i realize the MB and polo are different I was just asking about outdoor scenes and hoping a polo would be beneficial for the look... i realize it is not going to flag light...

on the link above that i just posted could someone look at the section that says "how does the cokin system work." in the picture it shows the adapter screwing onto the lens. so my question is simply this... would i buy an adapter for each lens and keep that on the lens at all times and then just have one filter holder that slides onto each lens when needed... is that how it would be used? thanks guys- this is awesome & crazy cheap on ebay!
