I currently own a set of Prime Nikkor AI-S Lenses
28mm f2
50mm f1.4
85mm f2
105mm f2.5
I plan to use these on a Mark IV with a Cinevate Nikon to EOS Adapter, but I have no idea how they'll
perform since I've never had a chance to use them.... I'm also thinking with the 1.3 crop of the Mark IV I might want to get something wider, especially for music videos... any recommendations? should I stick with Nikon? Also, should I get a zoom if I want to do run and gun stuff such as weddings? any recommendations? or will my primes be sufficient for now? I want fast & sharp but I don't want to spend an arm and leg.
I believe you are on the right track. You definitely would like a zoom for run and gun, something like the 16:35, or the 24:70. I would also suggest to get the widest lens available for full frame, which is either a 14 or a 15mm, I'm not sure. These lenses normally don't need very big apertures, because one hardly uses ultra wides for low DOF, and the high ISO characteristics are enough for low light shooting. The crop factor is much lower than a 1.6x APS-C sensor, so IMO you could stick with your current set of primes, and just add an 18, 16 or 15mm for the wide end, and the zooms. Also stick with the same brand of lenses, because, from personal experience, every brand has its own unique look. Sometimes, even from the same manufacturer, the lenses tend to have differences between them. For Nikon, for example, the higher end lenses (1.2/1.4 appertures, or the 2.8 Zooms) have a distinct greenish look to them. Nothing, however, that can't be managed in post.

If I got a 16-35 zoom, then I would be covered on the wide I think... are you talking about the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L II?
Maybe if my budget allows, I should just invest in some good quality canon zooms, since it's a canon camera. Will I be able to use EOS lenses on the Scarlet?
Rhys, that's the lens.
As for th Scarlet, official specs are expected next week, so until then we do not know what mounting options will be there. If the Red One is an example, though ,yes you could use EOS lens. The only problem is, EOS lens do not have an aperture ring, which means that the camera has to be able to electronically select the aperture. I do not know if you can do this on the Red One, and highly doubt anything other than Canon Cameras will be ble to control the aperture of Canon lenses...

After more research I think I've decided to go for Nikon zooms with aperture rings.
Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 AF-S
Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D
That would pretty much cover me for now.
Then down the track maybe these two lenses:
Nikon 14mm f/2.8 AF-D ED
Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 AF-S

Any reason you'd go for Nikon lenses over Canon? There are Canon equivalents for every lens you want.

Because I want to invest in lenses that have manual aperture control rings, so I can use them more easily on other cameras such as REDs Scarlet.
