Just went out for a couple hours to try out the new lens. I've had it for a few days and it's fantastic.

Mostly aquarium footage; however, I plan on doing a guerrilla shoot there for a couple scenes for a feature, so it was fun to go scout it out and shoot video the whole time and everyone just looked at me like I was taking stills if they paid attention to me at all.

Grabbing focus with the lens and doing handheld is pretty easy. I didn't use any stabilization within the aquarium and the only time I had some bad shaky moments was when I tried to void bumping into people who were walking past me.

No CC, but I experimented a tiny bit with in camera settings in regards to saturation and contrast for the exterior shots.

Indoors was sharpness and contrast all the way down in the "neutral" picture profile.

Fixed now. I don't know why it would default to private since I never even messed with those settings before.

No problem, that opening shot is badass!

Did you shoot 720 or 1080? Look at all the antialiasing on the opening shot on the skyscrapers.

Other than that, the shots are great!

I would say it's 720, especially the next shot you can definitly tell that horse is in slomotion. That opening shot aliasing would look better in 1080 but the camera shake would be worse, you could get a glidecam and just stick your arm out the window :)

haha I'll go shoot the same shot this week in 1080 and see what it looks like.

Considering that the shot has basically no shake at all in 720, I think in 1080 it'll probably look good too.

The IS is very good on the 17-55. Of course to match the shot I'd have to drive slower, which will probably cause more shake on a bumpy road.

I'm going to play around with some diffusion effects and see what happens to the AA/Moire.

I shot a bit a combo of 720 and 1080. The driving shots are 720 and the final shot with the 2 guys outside is 720 as well.

Indoors I went back and forth between 720 and 1080 depending on what I was shoot.

The dolphins were 720, because they're so fast. The sharks and sting-ray shots are a mix of 720 and 1080.

I also think that if I didn't shoot with as much contrast on that first shot the aliasing would be a little less noticeable.

Mine comes in today. What an investment, but it'll be worth it!

It ain't cheap that's for sure, but definitely worth the price. I wonder how the new Tamron coming out will fair at 1/2 the price basically.

The one that's out allready with out the stabilization is actaully really sharp, I was checking it out on flickr, I think I'm gonna get em for my T1is

Sounds like an intriguing option for one of the IS versions for the 7D. I always enjoy saving money when I can :D

Definitely two of my favourite shots as well. Rory, are you considering returning the lens for the Tamron version or have you made up your mind that this lens was worth the money?

I definitely think the canon is a fantastic lens; however, I took it back for now so that I can try out the tamron. For video I think it'll be pretty solid, but once I have a chance to play with it I'll be able to make my mind up.
