Would like longer zoom than 13x. A friend tried a 2x extender but reports that it doesn't work-- the result is tunnel vision. Suggestions?

Schneider 2x will give you good quality at the long end of the zoom range, but yes there will be tunnel vision at the shorter end of the zoom range. That's just how it is.

I can imagine the quality would probably be affected as well. THis is pure speculation though I honestly have no idea. I personally hate when the image is cut off with a vignetting.... including those ridiculously extreme wide angle lenses in skate videos.

If you can get back far enough to frame a shot with the tele extender, it can make your DOF somewhat narrower.

It doesn't degrade the image quality to any noticeable degree at all.

Century Optics was bought out by Schneider, and B&H still lists them as Century Optics.

Century Precision Optics 1.6x HD Telephoto Conversion Lens for Panasonic AG-HPX170/AG-HMC150

Currently B&H doesn't have a listing for the 2.0x adapter for the HMC150, but they do show it for other cameras. It sells around $1,200.
