Hi there!
I spend a lot of time reading this forum. Great resource!
But, I found nothing to solve my little problem.
The simple question is:
Do I need to have my SD Cards in my GH-1 connected to my MacBookPro and use then the Log and Transfer in FCP7 for transcoding?
Because I just copied all the MTS files on my harddrive and tried to drag and drop the MTS files into the Log and Transfer window. Nope. I always get the same error:

Iīm on travel right now and donīt have my Gh-1 with me... But my MacBook with the footage. Any chance to transcode it without my camera?
Btw I get the same error when using Compressor.
Thanks for help!!!
Cheers,
r.

You need FCP 6.0.5 or later and then copy the entire 'PRIVATE' folder from the card, not just the .mts files.

Alright thanks!
I just copied the mts files... and renamed them already.
Hope the renaming isnīt a problem too. Iīm gonna to put them back into this PRIVAT folder...

This bit about needing the whole /PRIVATE hierarchy and not being able to rename your files is, in my opinion, reason enough to investigate one of the 3rd party solutions (Cineform, Voltaic, etc). For sanity's sake, I just like the idea of 1 file = 1 video.

You can't change anything in the PRIVATE folder or FCP L&T will not accept it. If you already lost the rest of the info you can transcode with a 3rd party app like NeoScene, Voltaic or my preference Toast10 - I believe Roxio's Popcorn 4 should do the job as well if you don't need the disc burning tools of Toast. Well, Toast have also the capacity to make a AVCHD archive and I saw somebody in another forum mentioning that this archive can be used with Log & Transfer.

Stay away from VoltaicHD on the mac, it involves two lossy transcoding steps instead of one. Toast 9/10 should be the way to go from my experience although Toast 9 used to cut of a few frames at the end, maybe this is fixed in version 10.

Toast10 adds 6 still frames at the beginning but starts audio at once so necessitates a de-link, audio slip and re-link. Few frames lost at beginning and end is common for AVCHD recording so always roll a few seconds extra after you've gotten what you need. It's not like we are wasting film negative or tape anymore.

True, but FCP does transcode those few frames correctly.

Have you tried other third software like mpeg streamclip, which also support avchd to prores conversion, gh1/gh2 avchd seams have problem when log and transfer to fcp, you can also find a proper tool on google, search keyword like convert gh1 to prores for fcp. Hope it helps.

I was able to see the SD card just fine, and L&T'd the flles across into ProRes..but when I copy the SD directory structure to, say, my external hard disk (root level), call it anything, and keep that structure intact, then it doesn't work. It's like I can't log and transfer from a local hard disk. No matter what I do, like go to the wheel icon and specify a path to it. It error messages to me that there is no supporting directory type. It's like it's saying that it cannot understand the file structure unless it's actually physically on the SD card. There are files there, though, and video.
The best mts converter for Mac. Transfer mts files to prores
