Stupid question about the zoom. I am looking to pick one up for the 7d. How do you guys mount it to your camera and does it pay to run it straight to the camera, with the auto gain, or sync in post?

It's time to get an all around DSLR Equipment section going....
Use a Hot Shoe Mount or, if you're on a rod support setup, something on an arm.

I'm assuming you could mount the H4 to a boompole as well.

I am going to go this route, http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31wDoy-fBoL._AA280_.jpg
This stand comes with my h4n (ordered via amazon, 299 for h4n, 16GB card, stand etc...)
Ive always heard that you want your mic off your camera and closer to your subject.
Unless your a 1 man operation, then yeah you can use a simple hotshoe adapter that should be no more than $5-15.
cant wait to actually have some quality sound.
(shooting with D90)
:)
I wish i would have had the h4n when i shot the documentary i am working on (in the editing process now), it would have come out much better, but im hoping that the onboard d90 sound will be sufficient. (we had another audio solution, but the guy recording it some how lost the tape he was recording to or something, FUUUUUUUuuuu!)

My brother works for a professional AV company... when I went in to purchase the H4n, one of the audio techs said he had helped someone the day prior setup a 5d with the H4n.
They used a headphone splitter with one line for headphones (to monitor levels off the device directly) and the other line to the camera. With the camera line, they had to use a limiter to step down the signal -30db or the signal was too hot for the camera.
I'm cool with syncing the audio in post... so I didn't bother with the extra cables so I can't testify to the veracity of the signal issue. But I can testify to the coolness of the H4n.
For mounting - I took one of my Sennheiser hot-shoe mounts, drilled a small hole through the plastic and threaded a tripod bolt through it... I didn't have time to wait for the adapter.

okay, so are you guys not running xlr cables from a boom into the h4n? is it a good enough device that you don't need lav mics or a boom pole? it seems most people are just hot shoe mounting them on the camera and then just letting it capture sound without any other audio in the room? is that correct?

Yeah, is that correct?

It depends on what's being recorded and what the shooting situation is. I've used it both ways. In one interview setup, I had a mic on a boom pole XLR-ed into the H4n. For another interview setup, where I couldn't have a boom pole, I just placed the H4n as close as I could to the talent.
Both scenarios produced perfectly "usable" audio.

The problem with running a boom directly into the zoom w/o a mixer is that, unless it has some kind of battery power, you will run into the same problem I had, which is, when phantom power is enabled on the zoom, your double A batteries get sucked dry in no time.
Which is one of the many reasons I use a SD302 with it from now on.

I can attest that the H4n, sucks batteries FAST when providing phantom power. If you are inside you can use the AC adapter though so that is a nice feature.
I am going to be shooting this week inside a restaurant, (probably gorilla style), so im not sure if im going to bring my xlr mic, or just place the H4n close to the talent and record that way.
stay tuned
