There are already topics about Sigma 30/1.4 and Canon 28/1.8. Does anyone use Sigma 28/1.8 Macro? How is it? I know commanderspike has one of those, but he didnt post any footage yet :( I thought this Sigma can be the best deal for me, because it's wider than 30mm and actually I dont need F1.4 too much. That macro ability could be fun too. The price is pretty low, about 380$.

there is also a canon 35mm 2.0 (which would be 56mm on the 7d)

(I posted this in the other thread and only just realised that there was this thread):
What does it mean when a lens is "Macro"? Does it just mean it functions like a regular prime, but is good at macro stuff too?

From sigmaphoto.com:
"Macro capability
This lens is capable of Macro photography, with minimum shooting distance of 20cm (7.8 inch) (reproduction ratio 1 : 2.9) and angle of view is 75.4."
Surprisingly, some users report they can focus as close as 5cm! On the other hand I think the lens is too wide and its aperture is too high to be considered as a true macro lens. Even on the Sigma's websites it is signed as a 'wide lens', not as 'macro lens'.

Hey Snicky, I use the lens on the GH1 and 5D. Macro mode is best on the GH1 due to it's 2x crop but obviously you don't get the wide angle.
The first two shots of my music video (grass macro and sky wide shot) are with this lens on the GH1: http://www.vimeo.com/6525278
I am uploading a new video which has more macro shots in it. Will post later today.
You get an insanely shallow DOF on macro shots wide open.
I like the lens a lot. A little soft wide open, but there really is nothing else quite like it at it's price.
Taiwan is a great place to pick up the 7D. Do you know it's 15-85mm IS kit deal is about £600 cheaper than in Europe!! Enjoy!

Hopefully I will buy 7D this month. Is there something special about this lens? It is F3.5-5.6 so pretty slow. How about the resolution and abberations? Is this IS function important for shooting video? I still havent decided if I should buy the whole kit or body only. Right now Im considering 7D + Sigma (28 or 30) + Canon 50 (1.4 or 1.8) and I want also to attach my Nikon 18-200 with a proper adapter.

7D out in Taiwan next Thursday Snicky :) Get it
The 15-85mm IS lens kit and 7D for £1500 is some £600 cheaper than in Europe.
Here is the footage I shot with the Sigma 28mm F1.8
The lens compared to a prime Zeiss of the same price is nothing special in terms of image quality but F1.8 and the macro function ARE very special and worth the price of the lens ALONE!
Here is my latest footage from the lens. All the macro shots, eyes & sunlit face were done with the Sigma lens in macro mode. The rest is with a Leica 25mm F1.4 and Canon EFS 10-20mm F3.5
PS - I am moving back to Taiwan in November. Really enjoy it there and plan to shoot more movies!
