I don't have an up-to-date edit system for HD. So, I went out today and shot on glorious 640x480 60P standard definition just to get more familiar with the camera.

I'm kickin' it old school, y'all. Dig it!

I meant to post this in the footage forum.

Nice! And I thought you were only here to post funny pictures for us to write captions for. ;)

Well, searching for caption-worthy images is my main job. ;)

Yea, YouTube SD compression can be pretty depressing. I plan to do some SD recording of sales presentations and such that will end up as Flash learning objects served HTTP in HTML wrappers. The 640x480 VGA size is perfect for a Web page layout and (as you noticed) the 7D makes some really pretty SD. Also, the 29:59 record time is a godsend for a lot of the corporate presentation work I do.

btw... Thought I read somewhere about a way to set the ISO on the 7D (or was it the 5DII?) to 50. I can't remember the procedure.

Anyone?

Looks great Terry. Did you mention lenses you shot with? I know you could change to hi and low ISO on the 5D, not sure about the rest, but it really had no useable benefit.

Why SD? This is a 1080p camera.

First sentence of the thread, LOL. :)

I used a Canon 70-200/2.8L IS and a Canon 10-22/3.5-4.5 EF-s.

At the moment, I only have a 1GHz Powerbook G4 (circa 2003) with 1 Gig of RAM and FCP 4.5 on it. So, you do the math...

Anyhow, there are several HD tests out there. I just wanted to get familiar with the camera and be able to play with the footage I shot. So, as I said, I decided to kick it old school and see what the camera was capable of with SD.

Thanks for doing that - worth looking at.

I'm kind of interested to know - and maybe this is a good place to ask - just how many people who have/are planning on getting a 7D actually have to deliver in HD? How many will have to find a workflow for delivering SD and what workflows are they using?

Every project I deliver, I deliver in 480p. Most in my market are still looking for plain ol' DVD. We are just now...literally, within the last 30 days, able to place local HD advertising (networks/cable). I've had one wedding request HiDef so far. We build into one of our packages delivery on Blu-Ray or Apple TV (H/W built into package price).

You're absolutely right, the bulk in many markets are still fine with 480p. I've always down rezzed from the final 720/1080 edit though...so still shooting HD for master.

Very nice to see how pretty the SD footage looks....and for those cases, you're right about the length of recording (30 mins vs. 12).

Thanks for the info and footage
