I am too lazy to think of anything witty to write here, so I am just copying and pasting exactly what I wrote on vimeo.
I finally had a couple of days off to play around with my Canon 7D and I've been reading a bunch of stuff about the camera being unable to handle deep focus shots with a bunch of detail(brick walls, power lines etc.) especially in 720p.
So I decided to venture out with nothing but a 35mm Zeiss f2.8 and shoot as much wide deep focus shots as I could to see how horrible the aliasing and moire can be in real world situations.
It's definitely there, but on only a few occasions can I say it's UBER distracting, at least to me anyways. An AA/Moire filter would probably help matters, not to mention a Fader ND(Still waiting for mine in the mail) to allow you to control exposure and shutter speed.
I was shooting to conform to 23.98, so I was shooting High Shutter Speed anyways. Sometimes I was at 250 or higher because it was so bright, so there's definitely some strobing moments and that probably accentuated some of the Aliasing and Moire in some of the shots in this random video of mine.
The still photos I threw in, because I felt like it. Some are with the 7D, others are with a Panasonic GH1, an iPhone, a Canon 5D Mkii, and regular ol' point and shoots, so don't take any of those photos to heart as part of my experiment; I just can't do a standard test and need to break things up a bit.
As for settings everything was shot at 720/60p, conformed to 23.98 and then some stuff I sped back up on the timeline. 35mm Zeiss Lens and I Think there's probably even a 50mm Zeiss in one of the night shots, but I forget.
No Color Grading, I don't have a hoodloupe or anything similar right now, nor the fader ND as I mentioned, so getting exposure without either is tough and meant cranking the shutter speed; however, I was trying to get a harsher urban look in camera for a lot of it so it works. Nature stuff was obviously easier since it was overcast.
This is a long-winded ramble, so if anyone has some questions let me know.
Also the cigar shot of my dad was shot at 6400ISO and the noise is not as horrible as the web-compression makes it out to be.
I'm venturing to the aquarium with my Canon 7D tomorrow probably as well as a Panasonic GH1, so I might throw some stuff together later in the week and post it too.
P.S. All run n gun handheld shots and maybe 2 monopod shots from driving and walking around for a total of 2-3 hours over the course of 2 days.
Edited in about an hour, so hopefully my sloppy editing doesn't perturb people too much.
